A Cork oncologist who carried out the research said the findings are worrying for cancer patients - and doctors treating them.
One of the reports authors, Dr Dearbhaile Collins, Consultant Medical Oncologist, Cork University Hospital, and senior lecturer in cancer research at University College Cork said the findings are worrying. She said while many people who makes crowdfunding appeals do so in good faith and for legitimate supports, she said the organisations running these sites should have a role in checking the legitimacy of the treatments that people are appealing for support for.
"So I think the onus should fall on the crowdfunding pages themselves, the organisations that look after these pages in order to try and better regulate and better control what pages are able to be set up so that when generous people are offering money in order to support really vulnerable cancer patients that that money is going towards something that's actually helpful," said Dr Collins.
"In fact that happens for a lot of conventional cancer treatments like proton therapy which we don't have here but you can get abroad.
Crowdfunding for cancer treatments just in case it doesn't work in this country has to be investigated too. Large amounts raised and then spent on materialistic goods, that isn't right.
No shit
Oncology..Hopelessness…. can u blame patients who have nothing / little to lose for trying something else? I can understand why they wouldn’t say this to the oncologist as there would b repercussions. CancerSociety r the ones to contact for advice.
I'm convinced there has been a cure for quite alot of cancers out there but there is too much money to be made on peoples suffering. Imagine there were some cancers that could be cured..imagine how much these pharma companies would lose in profit. They dont care
fiannafailparty finegael HSELive And who is doing this study Those associated with medical professionals/pharmaceuticals. They are alarmed that any money may be diverted from their corrupt coffers therefore casting doubt. They have been exposed time & time again
And a lot of snake-oil salesmen willing to take their money.
Pretty obvious then that cancer patients want more options for care. Maybe they would speak to their consultants more about these topics if the consultants didn't demonise them for asking these questions
