The Green Party deputy leader and Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin has said that she intends to secure Cabinet approval for robust legislation introducing a new short-term property letting register.

She told delegates at the party's convention in Athlone that it will be operated by Fáilte Ireland, and the new controls have the potential to bring an estimated 12,000 homes back into the long-term housing market.New ‘green VAT’ rates would raise more tax, reduce emissions, researchers claim “We need to be honest about … what needs to be done.Image: Leah Farrell IT HAS COME to a point where the Green Party must make a decision.Green Party leader Eamon Ryan has said he is"absolutely confident" that his party will be able to secure the backing of one in 10 voters in the next General Election.

In her address, she contended that a change in approach to housing policy is underway, adding that a place to call home is a basic fundamental right which is"an absolute priority" for her party. However, she accused opposition politicians of being"disingenuous" if they do not accept that there is no quick fix to solving the housing challenge.“We’re going to have to put limits on the number of dairy cattle in the herd and we’re going to have to stop further expansion.Ms Martin said introducing cost rental housing is a core policy for the Greens, and this is now happening - with 18,000 cost-rental units scheduled to be be delivered by 2030.Connolly was addressing Minister of State and Green Party TD Malcolm Noonan, who was standing in for Fianna Fáil Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien who had left the Dáil chamber during the debate on Wednesday.Earlier, Green Party leader Eamon Ryan has said he is"absolutely confident" that his party will be able to secure the backing of one in 10 voters in the next General Election.” She was speaking as members of the Irish Rural Association protested outside the conference at the Radisson Hotel. He made the prediction at the Green Party Annual Convention in Athlone.that we’re witnessing.

Speaking to journalists, the Minister for the Environment said:"The scale of climate change that's happening. She said: “We believe that the end game is to actually try and stop us cutting turf and to cut our cattle herd.It does not record the homelessness of people surfing on couches or in refuges and so on,” she said...” But Ms O’Neill said she believed farmers did not know where they stood because there was a lot of misinformation undermining their confidence.that we’re witnessing.Green Party Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media, Catherine Martin with Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and other Green ministers and TDs..” She said it was not just for Government and required “a lot more concerted action by State agencies, especially Teagasc and EPA, to communicate the science much more directly and clearly”.Minister Ryan said:"Keep delivering, then we face that election with our heads up, proud of what we've been doing in Government serving our people.

."People will be put the question at the next election: 'Well, are you willing to vote for a safer future for your children, or grandchildren, or nieces, or nephews?' I think the answer to that from the Irish people will be yes.It could have been done with a “proper orderly just transition” but “we have left it so late that there’s no smooth transition.Connolly’s comments highlighted some important question for the Green Party." The Green Party leader said that it was now, however, time to keep"heads down" and focus on delivering while in Government.Minister Ryan said:"Keep delivering, then we face that election with our heads up, proud of what we've been doing in Government serving our people.” Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan said he believed that transport is “the hardest, the biggest, most difficult challenge because transport requires political courage at the local level”." He said the"first focus" was on the Local and European elections and focusing on what their councillors were doing at local level. While there are still two years to go, the party schedule shows that for two hours today, the party will have its eyes set on 2025, with a segment on ‘Getting Election Ready’ with tips on campaigning, planning and canvassing. It is expected he will say that tackling climate change through policies, such as retrofitting homes, will both reduce Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy bills for Irish families.

Mr Ryan added:"I think people recognise that that’s progress, positively working with people, delivering real change in people's daily quality of life.[ Greens want to save the planet, but will also need to salvage seats ] The Green Party leader told delegates that while they have to cut emissions in half by 2030, they are “going to grow 10 per cent this year because gridlock is coming back”.And I think people will vote for that." 'Whole tranche of new housing solutions' needed Minister Ryan has not ruled out the possibility of additional tax breaks for developers to assist tackling the housing crisis, saying they will look at every different option.Referring to the Cop27 conference and funding for mitigation measures, he said that under current climate finance arrangements, the majority goes to countries such as China, Brazil, India and South Africa, rather than to the poorest, small-island developing states and less developed nations. There is no doubt that housing is going to be the main issue in the next general election."You don't come to this with a kind of ideological position where you're not going to consider options. We'll look at every option. The conference also heard by zoom from Austrian Green minister for climate action Leonore Gewessler.30pm this evening, in which it is expected he will reference the Green Party's successes in Government and the significant challenges that lie ahead.

There hasn't been a specific option in that regard. However, in the Green Party’s programme, the mention of the word ‘housing’ is omitted." The minister said"everyone" acknowledges that there is a"real crisis in our housing" and that a"whole tranche of new housing solutions" are required to deal with it.She said Austria will have a record year for renewable energy this year but is also providing 100 per cent funding for insulation for lower income earners. He said:"There's no shortage of ambition, there's no shortage of willingness to provide public finances. But we have to go further and faster, and that means not ruling anything out.But we must do more." Minister Ryan said:"What's gone on in this country for so long, [is] that land is left fallow, it is held in store until being profitable to provide houses, we are introducing measures that will change that.

" He added:"I wouldn't rule out further measures. We will do everything to make sure we start getting supply - particularly in difficult times like this, when as I said high interest rates, high costs of construction due to global supply chain issues are making it very hard.Touching on the issues raised by Connolly this week, she said “it has come to a point where one could despair but those on the streets, in hotels or various bed and breakfasts who have no hope need us to give them hope”." Twitter employees not being treated with 'respect' Minister for Media Catherine Martin said is it a matter of"huge concern" to her that employees at Twitter are not being treated with"basic dignity and respect".She said the Government"will be there" when people are made redundant.Mr Ryan said the Government has been"very strong" is stating"how unhappy" they have been with Twitter's approach to redundancies.Over 5,000 readers like you have already stepped up and support us with a monthly payment or a once-off donation.

He added:"We've been very clear in calling-out what we see as low standards at the moment, in how people are being treated." Govt needs 'to go further in cutting childcare fees' Minister for Children Roderic O'Gorman said there is a"shared view across all three parties in Government" that they must do more to reduce childcare costs - particularly during a cost-of-living crisis. He said his firm view, and that of the Green Party, was that the Government needed"to go further in cutting [childcare] fees for parents".From next January, he said, there would be a 25% reduction"on average" in childcare fees which he contended would be a"huge benefit to parents' right across the country".While he said"everything" is dependent on the state of the public finances when designing Budget 2024, his ambition is to"continue to make childcare more affordable for parents.

..and I'll certainly be working to achieve that".Minister O'Gorman said he also wanted to make other investments, particularly making childcare more accessible for children with a disability through the access and inclusion model.Speeches from Ryan and Martin this evening The main event at this weekend's Green Party's Annual Convention is the joint leadership address which begins at 6.

30pm.Dramatically updating renewable energy targets and introducing new housing legislation are expected to feature prominently in the speeches by Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and deputy leader Catherine Martin at their party conference this evening. It is expected that Minister Eamon Ryan will signal a significant reduction in the time by which significant renewable energy targets will be achieved. It is understood that Ms Martin will signal her intention to bring robust proposals to Government for a new short-term property letting register..

I love starting My Sunday with a good joke - today I was rewarded with two🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 and EamonRyan 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Hopefully not. Congratulations RTE! Even if those '10 voters' were Eamon's close family members, it's doubtful there'd be someone deluded enough to vote for the Greenparty. Dead eyed freaks

Imagine that he is a “leader” ! Fear factor. You’d need your head examined to vote for this party after their disastrous performance over the last two years. Reneging on election promises and screwing the public during a cost of living crisis. Not a friend of rural Ireland. Has ruined E-car initiatives

So he can employ the other half of his extended family....firsts class flights alll the way 🤣🤣 They will be getting my vote 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

The Green Party convention takes place in Athlone - and it has a decision to make on housing'It has come to a point where the Green Party must make a decision. What is the homelessness figure at which it will recognise that Government housing policy is utterly failing?' We built 70k houses a year with workforce of 320k+. Now it’s employing less than half that with labour shortages. Water, sewerage, power networks need upgrading & building. Planning objections to such work should be blocked as-well as social/affordable housing projects. Happy yet? Which party is likely to get permission for robust, tiny houses to be built? That's who people will vote for.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Our PR system gives us clowns like him SibhHean You would want to be some turnip to vote Green. Think this fella has more of a chance Left wing Green parties all over the world are liars. They don’t address the issues on how some countries are allowed to pollute the planet while countries who produce low carbon emissions are penalised through extortionate taxes. Greens are useless cNts!!

Tánaiste stands over ‘grass looks greener’ comments but admits Dublin rents may be worst in EuropeThe Tánaiste insisted that some metrics are going in the right direction on housing with more than 2,000 mortgage approvals in the last month. CathMurphyTD I'd check those figures , they might not be as green as he says.

That Green leprechaun must be on drugs if he thinks the Greens will get 10% in the next election, get rid of the hypocrites. Roll on next election . 🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅🤣😅😂 This tells it all. Now that shows how deluded the Green Cult are. Eamon Ryan is not representing the Irish people. 😂😂😂😂 He must have stayed up late last night for the toyshow .

Martin signing off Celtic Interconnector plans in ParisFinal construction and financing agreements for the Celtic Interconnector is being signed off this morning in Paris. Another part of our energy independence sold down the swanny. L I am surprised they can spell their own names

The anti rural Ireland party, they only get their votes from elites in D4 😂 Nine of out ten voters prefer reality politics. While one out of ten may be fooled by green policy. It's a comforting to believe Eamon is wrong again. Would he be willing to bet a couple of solar panels and an air to water heat pump for my house on it

Would that be the un vetted illegal economic votes they're depending on, still Losers, Tik Tock /time I'll never make the mistake of voting for these clowns again. I hope they're wiped out at all levels in coming elections. Let’s see how well this will age 🤡

Government in 'emergency mode' but 'no quick fix' to housing crisis - MartinGreen Party Deputy Leader Catherine Martin has said that tackling the housing crisis is a 'top priority' for government, but there is 'no quick fix'. Stop housing non Irish people, it’s seems so obvious but not to a government that hates its own people Well she should resign

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣clown Eamon never sleeps, always scheming what the next thing he can charge us for,all I can say, keep the dream alive, never to old to dream! Definitely not me 🤷‍♀️ Doubt it He's a dipstick 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Dream on ya clown 🤡 people can’t heat their homes thanks to you

90% + in the disgraced cleric demographic? He needs to give his head a wobble Any sign of the luas to bray then , it runs into a field at Brides glen

And with 10% of the vote you get seats? Sure everyone's a winner! A number of my neighbours have organised to buy in real coal from Northern Ireland, best way to give the 2 fingers to these tree huggers is to raise a glass of wine while sitting in front of my real coal fire. No. And no. And get ft Pretty sure this is just a typo. He actually said he will be able to secure the backing of '10 voters', which is still a bit optimistic.

Chancers Ted What drugs is he on? The greens will sell their support to the highest bidder, I don’t believe in a word they say… Not. A. F€king. Hope. In . Hell! Dose not matter if Greens lose all their seats....They have converted all the other political parties to their policies and all the Irish media also....Amazing achievement by a small political party...Who stated as hippies not long ago...Eamon Ryan is a modern DeValera...

👍 Got it right on climate years before the rest, and keep getting themselves seats in the cabinet. More power to them.
