Cash-strapped RTE has cut its deficit back to €7.2million, according to its latest financial figures.
"Despite some truly great achievements highlighted in our annual report, RTÉ cannot run deficits indefinitely. Ms Doherty said RTE is fully engaged with the Government's Future of Media Commission, set up in September last year to look at the challenges faced by media outlets due to changes in technology, audience behaviour and a drop in advertising.RTE saw a small increase in revenue in 2019 to €342.1m, an improvement on the €339.1m seen in 2018.And a decline in commercial revenue by €4.2million to €145.8million was blamed on Brexit uncertainty and changes in media consumption habits.
Dee Forbes, director-general of RTÉ, added: “Across the organisation, we worked hard in 2019 to create real value for our audiences by producing more original content on RTÉ Player, diversifying into podcasts and streaming and repurposing our journalism for all platforms to reach people, wherever they are and whenever they like.
It's time to scrap RTE. The dross they roll out is astounding. Do we really need a state broadcaster?
