During an episode of 'Liveline' news broke of the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York on 11 September 2001.

Speaking to Joe Duffy by phone Niall O'Dowd, Editor of the Irish Voice, describes the scenes in New York after two passenger planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. The second crash was caught live on television. There's a major story breaking from New York. At this stage the cause of the crashes is still not known but Niall O'Dowd speculates that it could be the result of a terrorist attack although clarifies that this had yet to be verified. While the number of casualties is still unknown it is estimated that it will be catastrophic. Situated in the tip of Manhattan, the twin towers were previously the target of a terrorist attack when a bomb was detonated below the North Tower on 26 February 1993. After this attack an emergency plan was put in place in the event of a further attack. This plan is now being implemented. From the Upper East Side of Manhattan Niall O'Dowd describes the scenes of smoke appearing right across the horizon of New York City. It's the most incredible thing I think I've ever seen. A familiar site on the New York skyline the Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in Manhattan surpassing the Empire State. Towards the end of this interview O'Dowd receives news that the first plane was hijacked. This episode of 'Liveline' presented by Joe Duffy was broadcast on 11 September 2001.
