Speaking to Joe Duffy by phone Niall O'Dowd, Editor of the Irish Voice, describes the scenes in New York after two passenger planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre. The second crash was caught live on television.At this stage the cause of the crashes is still not known but Niall O'Dowd speculates that it could be the result of a terrorist attack although clarifies that this had yet to be verified.
Situated in the tip of Manhattan, the twin towers were previously the target of a terrorist attack when a bomb was detonated below the North Tower on 26 February 1993. After this attack an emergency plan was put in place in the event of a further attack. This plan is now being implemented.
