Fitness fanatic and former Dancing with the Stars winner and Kerry GAA star Aidan O'Mahony on how the past is shaping his future

Aidan O'Mahony has worn many hats over his lifetime - he has been the young lad with dreams of being a sheep farmer, the ferocious footballer, the focus of dramatic headlines, the dance champion, the Community Policing Officer, the author and now, the doting Dad with balance in his life.

When we catch up with him, his two daughters Lucia and Lilla are starting primary school and play school respectively, and he credits the school run with being part of what keeps him grounded and in a routine. No, the tears mostly were from Dad! But I think it's getting into a routine, after the summer and stuff, being away.

It's been so enjoyable. Lockdown opened my eyes and for other people that your health is your wealth, and it’s huge now. For me when the gyms closed, it took a part of my life away. The next stop was opening up my own gym at home, renovating the place, I was lucky I had the option to put in a fully kitted gym from McSport.

But it’s great to drop the two kids off, seeing them start to grow up and go off starting school, you come home after that 20 minute journey and realise just how lucky you are and what your priorities are. Workwise we talk about money and all these things, but your family and your health are your priorities. The school drop off just brings you back to your own childhood again, appreciating those simple things that you enjoyed.

I suppose now, I’m still that person I found in lockdown. After spending so many years running and racing, I thought to myself ‘for what?’ Were you really enjoying it or was it just to have money in your pocket? And now, family is number one, work is number two, my business is next, and I’m studying as well, and there is a place for all of them when you are enjoying it. Like everyone, there are good days and bad days, and it's about trying to see what’s good and tease things out.
