Ray D'Arcy is taking some well deserved time off from his RTÉ Radio 1 show this summer.

With his daughter Kate, aged 15, and his 10 year old son Tom finished school for the year, the much loved broadcaster has signed off for a couple of weeks.

He revealed last week that he would be taking a short break from the airwaves and Kathryn Thomas would be filling in for him while he was away.

Kathryn is no stranger to the Radio 1 afternoon show and she regularly replaces Ray while he is off air.

On Friday, Ray said: "Kathryn will be here on Monday and I will see you in a couple of week's time."

Kathryn then addressed RTÉ listeners on Monday afternoon as she explained the short term switch up until Ray comes back next month.

She said: "Good afternoon, how are you? Kathryn in for Ray for the next couple of weeks, I hope you had a lovely weekend."

There have been a lot of changes in radio on Radio 1, Newstalk, Today FM and 2fm over the past couple of years and Kathryn always get a massive response when she slots in on Radio 1, is that something she would like to do full time?

Kathryn recently told RSVP Magazine: "I love radio. Television is in my DNA, but radio is something I have been doing for a long time now and I am still building up my flying hours.

"When television is all you know, radio is a very different medium. It is a very intimate space, the delivery has to be different and your thought process has to be different. It is a very different machine."

The mother of two added: "I love how much Irish people love radio that still blows me away whenever I am on air.

"Radio offers different Irish phrases, different accents from around the country and different conversations. People just want an aul’ chinwag most of the time and I am someone that loves a chinwag."

Last month, Ryan Tubridy was off air and he was replaced by comedian Oliver Callan and broadcaster and fashion designer Brendan Courtney. Ronan Collins also took some time off and it was Rising Tide presenter Shay Byrne who filled in for him.

The Ray D'Arcy Show airs weekday afternoons from 3pm on RTÉ Radio 1.
