A man has been rescued after falling over a cliff in California and becoming trapped on a ledge halfway down the 150m tall cliff face.

A fisherman spotted the man stranded on Mussel Rock, and alerted the local fire service, but a rescue from ground level was not possible.

A helicopter crew from the California Highway Patrol managed to reach the man, despite the pilot having to battle strong winds to get close enough.

A rescue officer was lowered with a harness, which he used to secure the man, before he was winched to safety.

He was flown to a landing site nearby, and checked by paramedics.

Luckily, he did not sustain any injuries.
