Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to "trust experts" and "ignore lies" in a rallying cry for supporters to be vaccinated.

The UK is currently enduring yet another wave of Covid-19 infections, with the Omicron variant seeing a record number of daily cases on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, five Premier League matches have now been postponed as a result of coronavirus outbreaks, with Manchester United having as few as seven first-team players available for their clash with Brighton & Hove Albion this coming Saturday.

Klopp's Liverpool face Newcastle United at Anfield on Thursday evening, with fears that further restrictions on social activity could soon come into place during the festive period.

But the government are urging people to receive their booster jab to fight Omicron and the Reds boss is on the same page.

Klopp has been bullish in his message, urging fans to get vaccinated

In his programme notes for Thursday's match, Klopp wrote: "My message around this has always been simple and clear, I hope: I trust experts.

"I follow the advice of smart, educated people who know their field because they’ve dedicated their lives to it and have studied it.

"We are clearly moving back to stricter measures around the team environment and at LFC we are absolutely OK with that.

"As I have spoken about before, we have a very high take-up of the vaccine at our club and have done for a long time. It might be 100 per cent now or as close as is possible, so that’s important.

"I have no issue telling you I received my booster jab as soon as I was eligible and again that will be the case for many if not nearly all within our ranks in the coming days and weeks."

Klopp also affirmed that he 'would not apologise' for the view he holds on vaccines after sceptics were critical of his bullish message.

"I’m the same privately as I am publicly on this," the German manager explained.

"If I come across friends or people I care about in my life away from football and they tell me they haven’t had a jab yet, I do my best to encourage them to listen to experts. It’s never a case of ‘listen to me’ – it’s always ‘listen to those who know’.

Five Premier League matches have now been postponed due to Covid-19 outbreaks

"Ignore those who pretend to know. Ignore lies and misinformation. Listen to people who know best. If you do that, you end up wanting the vaccine and the booster."

The Premier League have also reiterated that the season will continue as normal for the time being amid calls for a firebreak.

"While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it is the League’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible," a statement read.

"The Board assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and COVID-19 postponement guidance issued to all clubs.

"It will assess a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of the COVID-19 outbreak at the club; and the ability of the players to safely prepare for and play the match.

"The Board must also consider the wider risks to the opposition and other people the club may come into contact with.

"In light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced Emergency Measures."
