Fines totalling more than €20,000 were handed out over the weekend to people for travelling more than 5km from their homes for non-essential purposes

In Co Wickow, 170 people were fined €100 each for travelling to the mountains, while another 30 in Co Longford were issued with fixed charge notices after they had travelled to Ballymahon where Newcastle Woods is based.

Gardaí say that despite widespread compliance with Level 5 restrictions, Wicklow was an exception, with cautions issued to more than 200 motorists and cars turned back on Saturday alone. Roscommon / Longford Roads Policing undertook an operation at Newcastle Woods, Ballymahon today in support of the public health measures.

— An Garda Síochána January 17, 2021 Gardaí said while it is important for people to exercise and get fresh air, this must be done within a 5km radius of their homes in accordance with current Level 5 restrictions.Gardaí say motorists are at risk of having their car being towed away and impounded if they park illegally at such amenities, because it can hinder access by emergency services.

Use the fines to finance the vacancies rollout

Great, hit these fkwits with bigger fines please.

much easier to fine regular people than catching real criminals

Does every non-essential driver outside the 5km get fined or just “ordinary” people?

Fining people for getting OUTDOORS too clear there head during a lockdown dirty scumbags never fail

I counted 12 cars in the car park of Tra Beg in Na Dúnaibh today. I can guarantee that 90% of them were from further away than 5km. I would say some of them were well over. How are we supposed to get a handle on COVID-19 if we have so many people who put themselves above the law

I will go to jail before I pay any bullshit covid fine.

People are really selfish sick and disgusting people need to start taking this serious Im glad they got fined should have got jail aswell.

I suppose this means car owners will get a rebate on their car tax now that we can't use our cars!!!!

This is Tyranny, make no mistake

Maybe we should use the money from the fines to pay everyone's revenue bills we are all due very soon because of CoVid-19 we didn't ask for this we didn't ask to take time off and we are not at fault for this pandemic

Seems fair notice was given.

Maybe the Gardai should have a road block at the airport carpark if they want to catch motorists/travellers in breach of the 5km inter-county ban. GardaTraffic

It's a real money spinner for them..

Why are non essential shop still open to many people out and about. Essential shop only.

Shows our inherent inability as a nation to forego our short term needs for longer term benefits. It's not the fresh air that's the issue, it's the principal of adhering to guidelines. We are only being asked for the sake of the elderly and our hosp staff.

Well done.

Good... Donate the 20 grand to a nursing home or something now 👍

Gardai should have been given this legislation months ago. I'm sure they're sick advising, recommending opportuniist motorists.. Now it's simple, no confrontation, no arguments. I should envisage thousands more being issued. Legislators must stop pussyfooting....

But 1500 workers from Brazil were allowed to enter the country without a negative COVID test?

Yet ppl can travel thousands of miles to Ireland and move freely - priorities?

Delighted to see this 😃

Don't recall party goers getting any fines in various VENUES.

Is 5 k necessary. As far as I see 5k is causing parks to be overcrowded. Too many converging in same spaces.

Ocionnaith Stay within your designated areas, you selfish dickheads! I don’t want you straying into my 87 year old mum’s area and infecting her.

ScumMedia trying to up the scaremongering tactics 😂 to get people to take the Scamdemic serious - talk about DESPERATION What law have these people broke?🤔

This whole lockdown is destroying our mental physical and emotional health. Fining people is adding to the stress.

Entitlement tax.

I'm scared of cycling now.

Delighted, about time Gardai started to fine people, enough warnings were given but some have absolutely no intentions of helping stop the spread so a hit in their pockets might make them think again. Keep up the good work GardaTraffic

The Irish Stazi up and running

When you get people traveling more than 5km to a popular tourist spot and it gets closed off because overcrowding then the locals miss out on using that spot that day especially if it is a nice day.

Tell me again how it’s not like Saudi Arabia?

Fair play

Would people be more willing to pay fines if the proceeds went directly to healthcare staff?

Yet before covid, if ya lived in rural Ireland, the chance of getting gardai out on time when your house was being burgled, was the same odds as finding an honest politician or playing the lotto....I do hope we still see such commitment to stopping rural crime when covid is done

I agree with this, we’re does this money go ?

😬

Can see this ending badly Looks at italy at the wkend, the people escorted the police out of restaurants, gyms and pubs What do we do,sit back and take it

I wouldn’t be proud of this if I were you.

Sonner the better we all realise we have to say at home best we can, this will be all over. Too much movement out there, as for our addiction to take away coffees

So you can be within your 5km and still fined if outside without a valid reason....is mental and physical health not a valid reason for getting fresh air. Crazy taking this liberty away from people...feel like a prisoner in my home

Their are people getting apparent leftover Covid-19 shots meanwhile guards are out handing fines to people walking.

Nice money maker 🙄

Stopping people from walking in nature in very remote areas is a revolting law and nothing whatsoever to do with spreading Covid. Stop the 5km law. It’s ridiculous. And it spreads Covid because everyone is corralled together walking in built up areas.

€20,000 euro fines that will be handed back to the recipients as they will be deemed unlawful

Always the money Angle. Perhaps, mask enforcement in shops/service stations would be a better use of the time then annoying people out getting some fresh air where the risk is very low compared to enclosed spaces.

40 people fined in pheonix park..... where will we go for a walk today ? How about just by garda headquarters 😂

People, nearly locked down for one year with their mental health decimated, have had enough!!! Who honestly thinks level 5 is the correct response anymore?

I wonder where that money will go, all a racket

fine by me! 🤣

And for people arriving by air and sea........?

More fines needed.

The moneys made on these fines should be put straight into the hospitals....often wondered where these fines money end up

Steady rise in number travelling further than 10km from homeCSO data suggests breaches of 5km travel limit with 36% of people making trips beyond 10km Imagine, there are parents out there who would be breaking the law if they took their kids to the park at the weekend. End this madness. You posted the same story last week and once again you haven't addressed the fact that huge numbers of the workforce are still travelling to their place of work. Twice would make it seem like a deliberate editorial choice by the paper. People should respect the advice of the HSE and adhere to their rules as between them and vaccinations it’s the only way that we can get rid of this disease..
