Should astrology be part of your wellness survival kit?

Whether you’re new to Aliza Kelly’s Stars Like Us podcast, or you’re a secret Co-Star horoscope addict — here’s everything you need to know when seeking escapism on a cosmic scale

Jennifer Freed, psychological astrologer and author ofUse Your Planets Wisely, has witnessed a surge in the recognition given to the value of astrology. “The interest in psychological astrology is almost impossible to keep up with,” she tellsVogue. She goes on to credit the rise of technology as one of the main reasons behind astrology’s increased popularity: “

We have really atrophied our ability to listen because we’re so used to relating to a screen, not a human being. You don’t have to be present, you can multitask.”It’s not great news for our empathy and attention levels. “The screen between us doesn’t address our longing for in-touch connection. Therefore, people are feeling this enormous gap of meaning in their lives

,”Freedcontinues. The suggestion is that from political, economic and environmental viewpoints, the world feels unstable, instilling widespread anxiety. The impact? Many of us are looking for alternative ways to navigate life which include both guidance and community — which astrology offers in abundance. Or in

Freed’s words: “Astrology has no good, bad, right or wrong. Just the possibility for personal growth and evolving. And everyone is welcome, no one is put in a hierarchy.”Should astrology be part of your wellness survival kit?Astrology has undoubtedly found a home among self-care pursuits such as meditation, healing crystals, yoga and mindfulness practices, and while you may already subscribe to Co-Star for quick-witted daily pointers based on your chart, is it time to consider astrology as your cosmic cheerleader on a wellness level?

The big caveat: astrology is not fully accepted in mainstream psychology. There is, however, common ground — particularly a search for identity, meaning and purpose. Astrology is about asking the right questions, rather than giving the right answers per se, while, as Freed explains, “

Psychology at its best is the practice of understanding our patterns and our gifts, and bringing them to fruition.”If astrology reveals our cosmic DNA — what you’re born with and how you can increase your skill sets as you develop in life — there is potentially a good marriage between the development of psychology and the development of spirituality.

Looking beyond your star signBy far the most accessible facet of astrology, the star sign is a byword for where the sun was at the moment of your birth. But this should just be your starting point, argues psychotherapist and astrologer Greg Bogart. In his view, by looking at the total picture of the sky at a given moment (or the moment you were born), you can get a much more complete understanding of yourself. “

From a birth chart cast for the date, place and time of birth, we get a symbolic portrait of inner structure and the inner organisation of our personality.” Our sun sign is important, but it does not define us— something to bear in mind if your perspective on the day ahead has a tendency to hinge on a one-line virtual horoscope.

There are 10 major planet placements that we need to be aware of in order to begin to understand our true selves and personality. “The moon helps us to understand our emotional dynamics; Venus, our capacity to express affection; and Mercury, our cognitive intelligence and the way we communicate. From here, we start to understand our complexity and how we are organised,” Bogart explains. If we use this information wisely, it could help reassure us to just let things be, or when to have a bit more patience (which is particularly important at the moment) as well as occasionally offering strategic insights as to when is the optimal time to undertake something.

So where to start? Pull up your birth chart online by entering the date, time and location of your birth (astro.com generates free, easy-to-read charts in an instant) and start to become familiar with the placements of your planets. Bogart suggests looking at your birth chart and also what is going on with the current transiting planets. “

In particular, learn to track the cycle of Saturn, which is steady and reliable. As it moves around the chart and touches the different planets, it awakens different parts of us, different parts of our nature.”When you work with your planets in this deliberate way, you can alleviate some of your stress. For Freed, reading your chart (much like therapy) is one of the most vulnerable things you can ever do. “

You’re approaching the map of your soul,” she says. But it’s important to keep an open mind and, clichéd as it might sound, remember that life is for living.“An astrology reading is a nudge towards somebody taking a direction in their life and owning it. But we shouldn’t live through our charts,

” Freed adds. And in regards to those of us who might need a little more convincing? “I’m sceptical too,” says Freed. “Some call astrology a pseudoscience while others consider it a science of the soul, but there’s only one way to find out where you stand — just try it and see if it has fruit!
