In December 2017, Adwoa Aboah was named Model of the Year by the British Fashion Council and, simultaneously,chose her as his cover girl for his first ever edition as Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue. These events didn’t happen by chance, though, as in the months leading up to this, the world of fashion had already been hailing her as the biggest new star on the scene.
When I was 18, I decided to dedicate myself to modelling. I wanted to be financially independent and to do something with my lifeis also one of the rare models who speaks openly and honestly about the decidedly less glamorous side of their lives; she grew up in London, in an environment where drugs were readily accessible. She became addicted to ketamine, was depressed and suffering from bipolar disorder, and a suicide attempt in 2015 left her in a coma for four days.
Now, I keep my feet on the ground, I take time for myself, and I surround myself with people I trust. “Gurls Talk” helps be stay connected to young people and inspiring women around the world .” Her outspoken advocacy on women’s rights comes at an important time; in 2017, luxury brands pledged to protect models, at time where the #MeToo movement was shaking the world of fashion and cinema. “The fashion industry is making amazing progress in terms of intersectionality.
