Where can you watch season 3 of The Crown?

Though Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed that it will be streaming The Crown season three, the American giant is sure to renew its contract with the series, given the incredible success of the first two seasons.

When will season 3 of The Crown be released?

It's official, the third season of The Crown will premiere on November 17. Prince Philip will be played by Tobias Menzies, who let slip a few details about the series to BBC Radio London. Aired in December 2017, the show's second season managed to grab the attention of more than a few fans.

Season 3 of The Crown will have a completely new cast

While the first two seasons of The Crown depicted Elizabeth II’s younger years (from the early 50s to the mid-60s), the third season will fast forward a few years and take place in the 70s. The passing in time also calls for a change in faces, with Claire Foy giving way to Olivia Coleman (Broadchurch) as Queen Elizabeth II, a choice deemed by Foy to be nothing short of “perfect”. Matt Smith will also be giving up his role as Prince Philip, and at the end of March, Tobias Menzies (Game of Thrones and Outlander) was officially announced as his replacement. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Erin Doherty will play Princess Anne, Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s daughter. Elizabeth, the Queen Mother will be played by Marion Bailey, while Josh O'Connor will slip into the skin of Prince Charles. Gillian Anderson (X-Files, Sex Education) will take on the role of Margaret Thatcher in season.

What is the plot of The Crown Season 3?

With the new cast comes a new time frame. Where season two finished in the mid-60s, the third season will open almost one decade later in the mid-70s. One thing is for sure: the divorce of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon, which was made official in 1978, will take center stage this season. The 1970s were in no way the royal family’s golden years, with a country in the throes of strikes, a state of emergency, a strained relationship with Canada, and the murder of Prince Philip’s uncle. That said, happier events, such as the marriage of Princess Anne, the Queen’s eldest daughter, in 1973 will no doubt provide some light relief. With such a rollercoaster of events, the third season certainly won’t be lacking in material.

A new face will join The Crown's lead roles

It has been confirmed that Helena Bonham Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret in the upcoming series. The actress will slip into the skin of the princess in her 40s as she goes through her divorce. "I"m not sure which I'm more terrified about - doing justice to the real Princess Margaret or following in the shoes of Vanessa Kirby. The only thing I can guarantee is that I'll be shorter than Vanessa." A departure for the actress known for playing fantasy and real-life eccentrics.

Two important women in Prince Charles's life will make an appearance

He met one in 1971 and the other in 1977: Camilla Parker-Bowles, the "other woman", and Diana Spencer, who would go on to become his wife. Prince Charles and his antics will be hinted at in the third season, set in the decade in which he both dated Camilla Shand (1971-1973) before enlisting for the army, and met Diana Spencer (1977), when she was just 16 and he was dating her older sister, Sarah. Viewers will most likely have to wait until season four to meet Princess Diana. On April 9, 2019, the actress playing the future wife of Prince Charles was revealed: Emma Corrin will stiep into her shoes. Peter Morgan told the Hollywood Reporter, "Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer." A relatively unknown actress, this role is sure to propel her onto the world stage.
