Wednesday: The master of romantic dread is tackling a large-scale project right in line with his previous work. Tim Burton is the producer and director of the new TV adaptation of The Addams Family. The 1938 work by Charles Addams had already taken over the small screen thanks to the 1964 series, with John Astin and Carolyn Jones on board as Gomez and Morticia Addams. While the gruesome family's success is still present, regardless of the type of adaptation, one could not ask for a better director than Tim Burton to take over the reins.
Wednesday Addams in the Modern World
First appearing in the New Yorker magazine in the 1930s, The Addams Family and their strange lifestyle have not aged a bit. Morticia, Gomez, their two children, and their unique entourage continue to make fans of the genre laugh and shudder. But for this new TV adaptation, MGM Studios want to center the action around Wednesday, who is now older and fitting into the modern world. While in 1964, it was the very young Lisa Loring who played the role, the most iconic of Wednesdays remains Christina Ricci, in Barry Sonnenfeld's films of 1991 and 1993. The little girl with dark braids and an impassive gaze liked to pull the most Machiavellian pranks on her brother Pugsley, always encouraged by admiring parents.
The upcoming series should therefore reveal a young adult who is more sadistic and ingenious than ever. 19 years old actress Jenna Ortega will play the character for Tim Burton. She was previously seen in Yes Day, Jane the Virgin and season 2 of You. She will act alongside Catherine Zeta-Jones who will play Morticia Addams, Luis Guzman and Gwendoline Christie, seen in Games of Thrones.
After Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride, and Dark Shadows, the project seems to be tailor-made for Tim Burton. Twisted trees, macabre atmosphere, dark characters with black-rimmed eyes - the director's universe fits perfectly with that of the Addams Family. In addition to the comedy, and the intrinsic charm of the clan, the director can bring his recognizable romantic-gothic touch.
The Wednesday Addams spin-off is already available on Netflix. And there's good news for those who have already binge-watched it, the show has been renewed for a second season, due out soon.
