presented an extremely interesting booklet titled Colchester to the Rescue. It was Maybee who provided a lot of the research for the publication.

“In 2007, I bought an elderly house on Cabot Street in Halifax, it was built in 1896 and had survived the Halifax Explosion,” Maybee said. “In researching its history, I learned it had been owned and inhabited by relatives of harbour pilot Francis MacKay and that he had often been a visitor there. In fact, his widow had resided there after he died in 1961.”

“I first wrote an academic paper in 2010, with 92 footnotes. I then decided to create a book that would tell the human story with photos and personal details. That became Aftershock: The Halifax Explosion and the Persecution of Pilot Francis MacKay.” “It bothers me greatly that the work of Nova Scotians and particularly from this town and county have been overlooked while praise, deserving too of course, flows over the border with the Christmas tree. The women of Truro established three emergency shelters within the next few hours and were ready to receive wounded people by mid-afternoon.
