While some Canadians are reporting empty shelves in grocery stores across the country, experts say this is due to ongoing supply chain issues that began at the start of the pandemic, not because of the federal government's vaccine mandate for truckers.

"Grocers know that empty shelves are bad for business… and [they] will make things move along the supply chain so consumers can leave grocery stores with products in their hands," Charlebois told CTVNews.ca in a telephone interview on Wednesday. The food industry has been warning since March 2020 that Canadians will likely experience shortages of some items and increased prices at the grocery store amid COVID-19.

"There's certainly less variety than there should be and we're not as full as we'd like to be," he said. "But we're not missing food out there." University of Guelph agribusiness professor Simon Somogyi told CTVNews.ca that if there are issues getting supply from truckers travelling into Canada, he said it is mostly because of winter weather in the U.S.

I believe CTV is becoming Canada’s F news.

Caus there making room for valentine's day produce

CTVNationalNews Fake news

I don’t see empty shelves… I see high prices

Everyone that works with production has coronavirus so that halts production because they are sick at home

Don't see any empty shelves in Markham.

Where are you getting your information? Jason Kenney? Erin O'Toole?

CTVNationalNews The real problem is the increasing costs of groceries.

Well if it’s really absenteeism, show us the back rooms.. there should be tons of food waiting to be put out.. no Weird.. another lie eh? Walmart puts food out as soon as they get it in.. no food is held in the back rooms

CTVNationalNews Where Be specific.

CTVNationalNews Canadian Truckers are on the job. The big rigs are mostly Americans. Who, of course, must be vaccinated to get in. It's a political fundraiser. MaverickPartyScam

CTVNationalNews CTV you have been hoodwinked by a right wing political stunt. FluTruxKlan MaverickPartyScam

Proof? Cuz I’m tired of the trucker exaggerations. Search Superstore on this app. Nothing but stocked shelves.

Employee absenteeism Happening because they get sick, or told to stay home if sick or in contact with someone sick. everywhere in supply chain, not just truckers. It will get better, truckers included…I mean they get well paid to drive.

The spice section at the grocery store I shop at has been completely empty since before Xmas. Jumbo eggs, soy milk and some canned goods have also been hard to find.

This article approved by Trudeau's Ministry of Truth.

Good grief CTV - surely there is actual news that needs reporting on.

Went to a local Loblaws last night to buy unsweetened non dairy milk: soy, cashew, almond, coconut etc. All gone, not a single container. Went to another Loblaws significantly farther from home and found the items there. This is just beginning. It will get much worse.

There are zero empty shelves in that photo.

Canadian media doesn't report news anymore, they manufacture it. CanadianMediaFailed

A specific type of rice I like, 1 supermarket didn’t have it, supermarket shelves were not empty, it was out of stock, I could buy other types! This has happened pre-covid & I am sure it will happen in the future. Went to another supermarket & they had it. Stop causing drama!

Haven't seen empty shelves at the three grocery stores I usually frequent. Maybe the problem is regional, but I can't help suspect this is alarmist BS.

Love Canadian media '...certainly less variety than there should be and we're not as full as we'd like to be' Been supply issues through pandemic, yes. No we won't starve, but how u say truckers not affecting current bare shelves now, when it was just passed recently? Unreal

Every where I have been they are full...people don't want to work. Specially at night filling shelf.

Are they though?

No shortages in the stores I have been this week !

Things are fine here in BC 1/26/22........CTV must be pedaling fake news again........

Took this at Costco yesterday- many racks like this

According to grocers, any minor shelf shortages are due to employees sick w Covid. CdnMediaFailed

Don’t see any empty shelves in Guelph.

Full on the east coast... 🤷‍♂️

Not empty in city I live in. This is false info!

Shame on you. All the shelves are fully stocked and you know it. And, as for the truckers' 'convoy'. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! 80 trucks crossing Canada protesting vaccine mandates while hundreds & hundreds are crossing the border everyday just doing their jobs.

Thank you for opening our eyes to how much fear media likes to push and how much we need to use our judgment and find the proof before believing.

I just went to Sobeys and the shelves are fully loaded !!!

If your kumquats and dragonfruit aren't there because you live in Flin Flon and the nearest distribution centre is a 5 hour drive away then maybe, just maybe, take it in cheek and be happy that your chicken nuggies are still safe and always in stock.

Rejecting carbon capture risks increasing emissions. Here's whyPut simply: Canada and the world need carbon capture in the toolkit to address climate change and meet international climate obligations. NatObserver Exactly. We need effective methods to channel renewables into CO2 capture when they overproduce. NatObserver Carbon capture tech is a cat chasing its own tail. The process requires energy, so you have to burn more fuel to run it, which decreases overall energy efficiency and increases emissions. You can’t change the laws of thermodynamics!
