Last Updated Thursday, February 20, 2020 4:59PM ESTTORONTO -- Home decor chain Pier 1 is just the latest retailer joining a growing list of businesses closing their shops in Canada.
“They don’t understand them anymore. They have no community with them. They’re not meeting their needs,” she said, adding that in many cases, these companies had been struggling for some time, with online shopping “kicking them in the teeth.”Stephens agreed and said all businesses today have to provide an experience for consumers, promising them “time well-saved or time well-spent.”
“A lot of these stores really haven’t changed in the last 10 to 20 years but the consumer definitely has,” Craig Patterson, founder of online publication Retail Insider, told CTVNews.ca. “What they’re bringing is a great understanding of their shopper and they’re not afraid to experiment in their retail location,” she said, citing pop-up shops or temporary outdoor malls.
A bankruptcy filing can give them a “chance to hopefully limp along in the future on a smaller format basis and try and rebuild the brand again,” she said.
CTVAtlantic I’m in no way happy to see people lose their jobs but companies like Pier 1 who’s merchandise’s prices were on the high-end attracted a smaller market. People flock to Amazon because of prices and convenience.
Amazon... And customer service sucks now.

Why are so many big retail stores closing? That would be a good question for our $264,400/year Minister of 'Middle Class Prosperity' MonaFortier. I don't believe she's been laid off, yet.
Cuz people don’t want to talk to people anymore
Very simple you dont need to be economist people dont have enough money to buy expensive clothes or merchandise tightening there belts everything is going up in price
Would you buy a couch/sofa on line without sitting on it? Would you buy shoes without trying them on? Apparently people do, but not me. I deal with stores who let me sit on the couch and try on the shoes. BlackburnEssex CBCWindsor
Retail prices have out paced hourly wages...
This guy
Consumers want price and quality, stores should be less fancy and smaller, they aimed to big and people are not ready to pay the price. Either you adapt or you fall, well, they didn't adapt.
Amazon. I don’t shop online but everyone I know does. They don’t seem to have a clue about the economy they’re creating for themselves.
Al comes from.bangladesh or china
nobody can afford to shop like before because of carbon tax
Stores are not keeping up with technology and not listening to what their customers want.
It's called 'online shopping' topped up with laziness.
In most cases, it's the economy. Big Brand stores mark up their clothing while competitors both online offer one-stop value shopping. More people are also going to thrift stores than ever before. While I love hudsonsbay - too expensive & for me, not accessible. (Disabled)
Online shopping. Wow that was a quick article.
