With just one per cent of Canadians vaccinated, and in the face of rising cases and strained hospitals, a new report from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization says provinces can accelerate the number of people being vaccinated by delaying the second dose for up to 42 days.

This would lengthen the specific waiting period between doses that has been proven to work in clinical trials for both vaccines.

“When you look at the epidemiological context where Ontario and Quebec are having huge community transmission, hospitalizations, complications, mortality, you have to wonder, do we have any data that would allow us to vaccinate more people at first,” she said. She pointed out that the wave of cases is very high right now, pushing the need for more vaccines fast to cut down on overall transmission, even if the efficacy of those vaccines might wane due to the delay.

“We're basically in a race against time,” Ashleigh Tuite, an epidemiologist and mathematical modeller with the University of Toronto, told CTV News. “And so the quicker we can get people vaccinated, the better.” It’s a plan endorsed by the World Health Organization, which said people can wait up to six weeks between doses to broaden coverage, with both the U.K. and the U.S. now releasing stored doses.

“The further you get away from that first dose before getting the second dose, the greater your relative risk is [than] if you've got that second dose on schedule.” “I think right now where we’re still prioritizing the highest risk populations, it makes the most sense to stick as closely to the vaccine recommended schedule as possible.”

glenmcgregor How CTV Fakenews lies to you and lied about FreedomConvoy. 👇

glenmcgregor Let’s be absolutely truthful here. The government was on the edge about the safety of if masks early on. The government only knows how to steal and lie IMO.

glenmcgregor You think this would've been figured out before the rollout of vaccines. Things are done half-fast.... Again.

glenmcgregor Listen to docs who work frontlines, not docs who sit on chairs, follow science, why the heck are we listening to government?

glenmcgregor Can’t believe this question is even being asked?!?! When has the government demonstrated that they have our best interest at heart?

CTV_AvisFavaro Need to follow the science for best results

CTV_AvisFavaro What is not being said is if you have a compromised/ older immune system & don't receive the proper doses at the proper time; you are playing roulette with your ability to survive. Delayed shots risks giving the virus the opportunity to mutate & render vaccine worthless.

CTV_AvisFavaro The developer of each vaccine publishes their recommendations for space between doses. They are scientists, medical experts. Follow their advice. This CANNOT be left to politicians to determine!

I heard it also cures baldness and promotes weight loss.

Dummies, the new variant will snuff out the old. These are oncology platforms and they better already have adjusted the target for second dose. Or get out the way and let people who can do the job do it. Let’s see these vaccines start going into cancer patients as well.

Should vaccinate sites be open 24/7 or as close as can be? Is it possible?

I hope the provincial governments can come up with a better plan. I do not think they are thinking out of the box. I know they will need more people to vaccinate. They should be training thousands of people in the cities and towns already to administer vaccine.

I am not comfortable with changing date of second dose. The vaccine is too new,

Making it up as they go along for convenience and cost. Health Canada approved the vaccine according to the product monograph which is the legal labeling. 2nd shot after 21 days. That's the demonstrated approved efficacy and safety.

Why don't we keep it at 20 degrees Celsius? Because the guys who developed and put it to trail says otherwise. Same thing applies here.

This is what panic looks like in the scientific world...

I’m not feeling settled about altering the dosing schedule from manufacturer’s recommendations during the vaccination phase of our most vulnerable populations as we are just getting distribution & processes working, with brand new vaccines.I understand it, but this groupno risk.
