NFL and players union avoid appeal ruling, settle on 11\u002Dgame suspension without pay for Browns QB, plus $5\u002Dmillion fine and mandatory counseling

The increased suspension is the most substantial part of the final, binding punishment handed down to the quarterback as agreed to Thursday, in a settlement reached between the league and its players’ union, which represented Watson.

“I want to say that I’m truly sorry to all of the women that I have impacted in this situation,” Watson told interviewer Aditi Kinkhabwala. “The decisions that I made in my life that put me in this position I would definitely like to have back, but I want to continue to move forward and grow and learn, and show that I am a true person of character.”More on Watson’s fresh reactions in a moment. First, a reminder of how we got here.

The league appealed Robinson’s decision, arguing for at least a full season’s suspension without pay. The NFLPA and Watson had argued for no suspension whatsoever. Watson is now one of the highest-paid players in league history. The Browns in March, upon acquiring via a blockbuster trade with Houston, rewarded him with a new $230-million, five-year deal that is so sweepingly back-loaded he’ll lose far less than $1 million in pay over his 11-game suspension, excluding the $5-million fine..

“I never assaulted anyone. I never disrespected anyone,” Watson told reporters in June. “I never forced anyone to do anything.”
