The University of New Mexico's Office of Substance Abuse Prevention is giving away coasters that could detect two of the most common date-rape drugs. With that in mind, the University of New Mexico is hoping some drink coasters can potentially prevent the nightmare of sexual assault for students.
To test with the coasters, users take a drop of their drink and rub it on two small circles and wait to see if the circles' colours change. A blue circle means the drink is spiked. Most incidents were informally reported to friends or family: 68 per cent of sexual batteries and 64 per cent of rapes. Only 4.3 per cent of sexual battery incidents and 12.5 per cent of rapes were reported to authorities during the study., a branch of the American Addiction Centers, found that 56 per cent of women and 44 per cent of men said their drinks were spiked without their knowledge. Nearly 40 per cent of respondents said it happened more than once.

That’s actually a very innovative idea. It’s a shame it’s needed in this day and age but a fantastic safety measure for sure.
