Toronto police unveiled new body-worn cameras on Monday that front-line officers will be required to wear across the city.

Deputy Shawna Coxon, Superintendent Michael Barsky, and members of 23 Division held a show and tell on Monday morning to demonstrate the technology and answer questions.

“There’s an extensive training component to this so it’s not quite as simple as just giving out a camera,” Coxon said. “We want to make sure the officers have the appropriate training, including on the privacy issues and the extensive governance we put in place to deal with them.” The aim of the cameras is to increase transparency and accountability amid several recent protests calling for the defunding of the police and even abolishing the police.

Coxon said the cameras will be turned on while officers are responding to a call but they can also be turned off for various reasons too. Coxon also noted that videos collected from the cameras won’t be easily accessible to the public. She said it will depend on the nature of every situation.

They can still turn them on and off. They can still manipulate the data from the device to a storage server. Unless cameras are kept on at all times during a call, and the data cannot be accessed by the wearer, cameras haven't solved the problem

Great idea for police and public safety especially in a world of amateur video makers who capture just the negative stuff happening and not the lead up to the incident. safety FirstResponders

Montreal Demonstrators Pull Down Macdonald Statue At Police Defunding ProtestThe protest's organizers are asking for cities to reduce their police budgets by 50 per cent. They’re crazy! What’s shameful is that the police stood there as a spectator & did not arrest a single person. Tomorrow if I pull down a statue of any religious figure (no matter how despicable & tyrant that person was in his time) I’ll be arrested & slapped with hundred frivolous charges. This wrong. Simple.
