Toronto is getting a bunch of new road signs to help stop drivers from speeding Toronto

These signs will be placed in the centre of the road to serve"as an additional tool in our road safety toolkit to encourage compliance with the posted speed limit in high-priority areas," according to Transportation Services.

i love living in toronto because you can spend your evening seeing exquisite, world-class art, and then on the way home get killed by a car speeding past open streetcar doorsInstallation is meant to happen on two-way roads with one travel lane in reach direction, parking areas or parking prohibitions to maintain a clear through lane and in areas with a posted speed limit not exceeding 40 kilometres/hour .

Though you might just think these are ordinary signs, they are designed to have a"narrowing effect" on roadways, which can give drivers the perception of the need to slow down.

Great idea! Seen these in Montreal, Ottawa & St.Jovit - they worked great at slowing people down. TBT we need more speed cameras in school zones & areas that require safer speeds.

How exactly does this help stop drivers from speeding? If this is part of a larger traffic calming strategy wonderful. Will streets be narrowed? Creative pinchpoints maybe. Is this part of a larger VisionZero rollout? Can we get all school zones to 30km/h?

They were installed a few years ago on Glenholme Ave. South of Eglinton Ave west and the signs are still standing.

Don’t do it. First day up in Beachville they were run over. AND EVERY DAY SINCE. Gives everyone a target!

Safer streets needed now in Toronto after drivers hit 3 pedestrians in 3 hours: advocateMore must be done now to make Toronto’s roads safer for pedestrians, says one safe streets advocate, after three people were hit by drivers while walking in this city Wednesday morning. Yes, roads are dangerous, don't assume drivers see you or will stop even if they do. Be aware of your surroundings. Vehicles will beat pedestrians everytime. I don’t know the background with these latest accidents but in a great number of these situations, it’s the pedestrian that is at fault. There are impaired and distracted drivers but many of these are the result of peds not crossing at the corne, wearing dark clothing etc. Maybe pedestrians should look up instead of down at their phones.
