It is the duty of everyone who cares about Toronto – starting with staff and leaders in city government – to stop it dead, writes alexbozikovic.

had called the place “a rare and intact Modernist expression of integrated architecture, engineering and landscape,” and “a remarkable and ambitious achievement of late 20th-century architecture.” The province has removed that statement from its website.that attracts roughly a million visitors a year. Provincial civil servants have been running the place as greenspace and as a cultural venue, hosting festivals, live music, picnics and sports.

On this delicate ground, Therme’s waterpark would fill most of the existing West Island and obliterate much of its existing landscape. In response to criticism, the company has decided to expand the island itself and provide more publicly accessible space around the edges. Yet the “spa” will spill into the landscape with gates and security guards, and the building itself will dominate. It’s vast and nearly as tall as the grandstands at nearby BMO Field.

The European company set to build a spa and waterpark complex at Ontario Place says it listened to concerns from Toronto officials and community activists and has enlarged the planned parkland that would surround its facility, submitting plans that include 12 acres of publicly accessible pathways and gardens and a 200-metre long beach. The documents submitted to the city don’t include precise architectural detail. But the outlines are clear.

And those are serious. Whatever Therme is paying to lease its site can’t possibly cover the public’s costs.

alexbozikovic It is important to let ThermeGroup ThermeCanada know that building their hulking suburban attraction on a precious and historic waterfront site, in a divisive and already much-derided project, will permanently damage their global brand.

alexbozikovic That's gonna dramatically remove a park that replaced once a thriving theme park. They should leave it as a park.

alexbozikovic Think of all the jobs there creating.

alexbozikovic I’m not paying to read this article…so build it!
