The Home Front: Designs on fun

grew up in Finland, close to the Russian border, and says her childhood memories influence her work today.

“From early on, I was very particular about my clothing and walked around in bold patterns, polka dots and stripes — clothes designed by me and made by my grandmother whom I was very close to. I left home at a young age and travelled around the world, studying batik [an Indonesian dying technique] and doing volunteer work in Asia and Africa. I was always very interested in local textiles, patterns and design traditions,” she says.

Although she’s been based in Vancouver for the past 20 years, Kaksonen says one of her favourite things is getting back to Finland every summer .“I never tire of the midsummer sun, and hanging out with my family at the summer cottage, where I also have my own small cottage studio. Too bad it’s 7000 kilometres away!” she says.“After [travelling through] 50 countries, I ended up in Japan and became fascinated by wabi-sabithe art of imperfection and impermanence.

“I like working with companies who have similar values to mine, and putting out long lasting items that people will love,” she says. Kaksonen’s latest collection is made to order — in the United States — from durable woven polyester and cotton that is water resistant, and UV coated to protect against staining, as it’s intended for indoor and
