'The eleventh hour': Petitions call for cancellation of April 1 rent payments

Provincial governments have yet to offer any explicit rent relief for Canadians worried about making a payment. Some provinces have banned evictions, others are offering subsidies for landlords, but the solutions amount to “patchwork,” said Claire Gallagher, a senior campaigner withPetitioners are calling for an all-out cancellation of rent on April 1 — not just a deferral — until people can safely return to work and pay rent as they were able to in the past.

“We expanded our call to include rent cancellation and mortgage payment cancellation, including interest, while we’re in this public health crisis,” she said. “We really believe that no one should fall into debt or risk losing their home because of COVID-19.” Rutherford’s landlord didn’t qualify for a mortgage deferral, he told CTVNews.ca, but she was willing to offer him some flexibility. “She said we’re all in this together and we’ll make up the difference later on,” he said. For now, he’s paid half of his April 1 rent. The deal with landlords is they made an 'investment' as renter rent because they have to. Sometimes investments lose money, but the landlords risked that buy buying a rental investment property.

One persons rent is another persons income.

So I have an condo as an investment property, do I get mortgage relief/ interest relief even though I’m still working(essential service)? Or am I going to be expected to now make two mortgage payments for who knows how long?

Once again; April is already here. You need to fix rental rates to 1/3 of previously established rates. For as long as the crisis continues, THEN establish a repayment plan without penalty.

Let's put it this way for everyone, how about all these landlords evict their tenants, how quickly are they going to find new tenants able to pay during the pandemic. Good luck without getting any rental income

You gotta do the mortgages too right, a renter needs help and so does the landlord who can’t cover rents for any length of time either!! which takes us to the Banks! I know my cc company is dying to give me more credit but upset if I miss a payment, how are the banks doing?

'SOME' people always want to take advantage of situations ,listen if you can afford to pay your rent pay it ,if you have financial issues talk to your landlord and make a partial payment...

It’s free if the government pays the rent for my tenants or the banks pay my mortgage and the city gives me a month free property tax and I don’t get charged the maintenance fees if it’s a no then they have to pay.

Building owners have to pay the banks.

Under the best of circumstances, getting the rent from tenants can be a difficult task. I had someone just tell me, 'no' once and then proceeded to live rent free until he was court ordered to leave the premises.
