Teachers report feeling constantly monitored and critiqued, citing a barrage of e-mails and phone messages from parents overstepping their role

Jennifer Doherty supervises her son Lucas Ianni, 9, at their apartment in Mississauga during his daily online lessons, Nov. 5, 2020.In the early days of the country’s unplanned foray into online learning last spring, Toronto mother Zabrina Rego got chastised by her child’s teacher for blurting out the answer to a question.

For some parents, staying quiet during class is proving difficult. Teachers say parents have been disruptive, interrupting lessons and interfering with their teaching. Other educators report feeling constantly monitored and critiqued, citing a barrage of e-mails and phone messages from parents overstepping their role.

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board wrote to parents last month to remind them not to meddle in classes after “a number of incidents of inappropriate parent/guardian interference and disruption in the online learning environment.” For many parents, determining what, if any, role they should play during their children’s virtual schooling has been challenging.

Jennifer Doherty, a Mississauga, Ont., mother, vented on a Facebook group after her son’s teacher suggested that the students go to bed earlier because they seemed tired. The comment touched a nerve because the teacher didn’t acknowledge the long hours of screen time and lack of breaks, she said.Doherty also took issue with the teacher’s high expectations of the split Grade 4-5 class, saying she was putting too much pressure on students and often mentioned curriculum standards they must meet.

With most of these comments it’s clear that the parents are more to blame than the teachers. They can’t seem to find the blame in themselves rather than the teachers. Teachers are very much underpaid for a demanding and important job. Parents used to also teach their children, but today the burden is put solely onto individuals trying to not only teach a class of children, but also please a crowd of uninformed, entitled adult children that only sees the world in a binary of extremes.

These teachers need to STFU. My partner has been an online ESL teacher for years and parent feedback, criticism, etc. Is how they are rated on performance. School teachers have had it too good for too long with unfair protections from their unions. They’re actually being seen for who they really are and they can’t handle it. Shape up or ship out. School is pretty much glorified daycare and this is exposing how flawed our educators are. Overpaid and ungrateful for their simple jobs.

3 times today alone the french teacher told my son to go ask your parent for some help. They need to make up their minds. My 7 yr old so also needed a hole puncher and a stapler.

Is there a scenario where the teachers don’t bitch about something. This article is a very dangerous move by teaching who are always crying for parents support. Next time they are marching down the street waving their signs, we’ll remind them of this article.

Teachers did not ask to become online teachers . This is not natural. Steep learning curve and it is more difficult being scrutinized by the parents. Also, the curriculum does want our students to think about about world views like diversity and culture. It builds character and insight.

After a few weeks of the online “learning”. I observed absolutely no learning whatsoever, just a lot of watching YouTube videos. I began homeschooling myself and I’m much happier with the learning we are doing now.

Since the teachers have spent most of the last ten years working to rule, threatening to strike and actually striking, it stands to reason that now they are complaining about expectations that they do their job effectively.

I thinks parents are getting a glimpse into how poorly taught their kids are, and the amount of time wasters built into to everyday.

“numbers that have recently ballooned owing to post-holiday school closings” is not accurate. Schools closed because numbers were high, not the other way around.

I sat with my 6yr old while the teacher spent 20mins trying to teach the kids who’s parents aren’t there how to mute and turn off video and then spent another 10mins watching a lagging YouTube video play. After the vid had no discussion, just a nutrition break.

Who do these Karens and Kevins think they are? Let the teachers teach and mind your business

Parents have the last word. Ideological teachers hate that

Pedos trying to keep the parents unaware of grooming programs.

And parents are finally get a good look at the crp their children are being taught. At least we can understand why true literacy rates are so low, eh?

As a father of an 8-yo, this type of observation is mandatory at this point. Have had to shut it down several times then have a talk with my child re what was shown. There was the video where she (& all classmates) was told 'Of course you are racist. Of course you are.'

Parents are Protecting the kids from the teachers broadcasting their porno screen.

Public education was never about education. It’s always about assimilation/indoctrination cloaked with a human right. By all means learn to read/write etc., true education doesn’t happen until after public education, if you have access to higher learning. You’re assimilated.

'The experts' have already stated our kids should be in school. This remote learning is bullshit.

It also give you the opportunity to record nonsense.

Awww, poor babies.

If teachers start teaching insane ideas like critical race theory or behaving like propagandists, it's not abnormal for parents to be concerned.

Parents voice concern over teachers indoctrinating their kids.

The parents are doing what is right - pushing back on Critical Race Theory Poison. Keep it up parents!

Yes, parents are getting a full view of what the schools are up to and it is not Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. One good outcome of Covid-19.

Parents now have a chance to actually sample the product their tax money is buying and having buyers remorse? How can we allow that?

Great insight on how teachers are feeling! Yesterday I shared some advice for parents on YourMorning, about how to navigate the fine line between “living room” & “classroom”😉 Let’s work together to do what’s best for our kids👇 jillsmahoney

This is a surprise

Unbelievable! Teachers are always saying they need more help and parents are doing their best! Does anyone realize this is a pandemic and patents are seeing first hand the stress of online learning what the pressures are doing to their kids. WakeUp homeschooling2021 anxiety

It must be so unnerving for students to know there are people listening to them answer questions and potentially make errors. The safe space teachers create for students in the classroom is being invaded. That should concern all parents.

I swear one of my kids teachers has a coke problem. She's had the sniffles literally every day since September

Will they go on strike over it?

Parents are stupids.
