The Wet’suwet’en have sought to clarify their rights and title to 22,000 square kilometres of traditional territory for decades, most notably through a court case that resulted in a landmark 1997 decision by the Supreme Court of Canada, but the issues have yet to be fully resolved. Former NDP MP Nathan Cullen, who has been serving as a liaison between the B.C. government and hereditary chiefs since late January, said the Wet’suwet’en Nation’s unceded traditional territory has been the focus of the meetings.“There is no such thing as a quick fix in this,” Mr. Cullen told reporters on Friday morning. “It was always going to be a table to solve this. It wasn’t going to happen at a blockade, it wasn’t going to happen at a protest.

Grand Chief Joseph Norton said the measure would allow the RCMP to withdraw from the area as hereditary chiefs and government representatives work to negotiate an end to the pipeline dispute. At the Port of Vancouver, Canada’s busiest export terminal, the protests have worsened the slowdowns and backlogs caused by global trade tensions, recent landslides in B.C., and the outbreak of COVID-19, which has slowed factory output in China.

Talks cancelled between Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs, federal and B.C. governmentsProposed talks between the Wet'suwet'en hereditary chiefs and the federal and B.C. governments have been called off, at least for now, as demonstrations over the Coastal GasLink pipeline and Indigenous land rights cause disruptions across the country. Jail Our government shouldn't negotiate with domestic terrorists. Rightfully so. The Govt asked for them to ask the protesters to stand down. Standard in hostage negotiations. If you don't get anything, you don't negotiate.
