The dwindling witnesses to the world's first atomic bombing marked its 75th anniversary Thursday in Hiroshima.

FILE - In this Sept. 8, 1945, file photo, an allied correspondent stands in a sea of rubble before the shell of a building that once was a movie theater in Hiroshima, western Japan, a month after the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare was dropped by the U.S. to hasten Japan's surrender.

His speech highlights what survivors feel is the hypocrisy of Japan's government, which hosts 50,000 American troops and is protected by the U.S. nuclear umbrella. Tokyo has not signed the nuclear weapons ban treaty adopted in 2017, despite its non-nuclear pledge, a failure to act that atomic bombing survivors and pacifist groups call insincere.

Thursday's peace ceremony at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was scaled down because of the coronavirus pandemic. The fewer than 1,000 attendees was one-tenth of those attending in past years. "Japan's position is to serve as a bridge between different sides and patiently promote their dialogue and actions to achieve a world without nuclear weapons," Abe said. Nuclear policies are divided amid a harsh security environment, so it is necessary to create common ground first, he said."The only way to totally eliminate nuclear risk is to totally eliminate nuclear weapons," he said in his video message from New York for the occasion.

On the 75th anniversary, elderly survivors, whose average age now exceeds 83, lamented the slow progress of nuclear disarmament.

是时候把美军赶出日本国土了。

An unimaginably horrific event. The fact that we don't consider Truman a butcher on the level of Stalin, Hitler, or Tojo shows how much we've been brainwashed by US propaganda

Boo hoo, boo hoo! Give me a break. What about Japan's cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor? They used babies as footballs. Horrendous treatment of POW's. Should have dropped a 3rd bomb.

Did the Japanese have a 75th anniversary for the Bataan death March, how about the raping of Nanjing?

People who would have been killed eventually by 1,000’s of tons of napalm dropped on them every night for 100 nights. And many more of their fellow citizens. The decision to use Atomic weapons has to be in context.

The rest of the world, 3 or billion at the time(?) celebrates the end of a decade of Japanese savagery, torture, and murder.

It’s all CCP’s tricks; CCP must be sanctioned, otherwise the world is a terrorist attack

Yet here we are ... with Beirut in ruins and no one has sent the help they promised except Poland? I will, however, pray for Hiroshima's fallen and survivors. May God protect us from ourselves.

A necessary evil

America’s biggest mistake.

Urgency to bear witness grows for last Hiroshima victimsFor nearly 70 years, until he turned 85, Lee Jong-keun hid his past as an atomic bomb survivor, fearful of the widespread discrimination against blast victims that has long persisted in Japan. Such tragic tales. I had no idea such discrimination still remains towards the survivors. The young generation must learn and know of this history or history will repeat itself.
