The Supreme Court early Tuesday cleared the way for the resumption of executions of federal prison inmates, removing a hold placed hours earlier by a trial judge. But it was unclear when the first execution would be carried out.

The justices voted to allow the first executions on the federal level since 2003 to proceed at the federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

A U.S. district judge on Monday ordered a new delay in federal executions, hours before the first lethal injection was scheduled to be carried out at a federal prison in Indiana. The Trump administration immediately appealed to a higher court, asking that the executions move forward. The inmates have identified alternatives, including the use of an opioid or anti-anxiety drug at the start of the procedure or a different method altogether, a firing squad, Chutkan said. And the Bureau of Prisons continued with preparations in order to move forward should the stay be lifted. The man slated for execution, Daniel Lewis Lee has had access to social visitors, has visited with his spiritual adviser and has been allowed to receive mail, prison officials said.

The decision to move forward with the execution -- and two others scheduled later in the week -- during a global health pandemic that has killed more than 135,000 people in the United States and is ravaging prisons nationwide, drew scrutiny from civil rights groups as well as family of Lee's victims.

But relatives of those killed by Lee strongly oppose that idea. They wanted to be present to counter any contention that it was being done on their behalf. Barr said he believes the Bureau of Prisons could "carry out these executions without being at risk." The agency has put a number of additional measures in place, including temperature checks and requiring witnesses to wear masks.

old news...he's already dead

By your headline, I thought this was a Canadian story. The C in CTV does stand for Canada, right?

I do not believe in the death penalty. But if I did I would want to prevent the on/off/on/off/on saga of the last few days. These men & their families are being subjected to a steep emotional roller coaster & it’s wrong.

What did spies caught during WW II take to commit suicide rather than be tortured to maybe spilling secrets take? Wasn't it cyanide? If this is effective, then I fail to see why this isn't used instead of lethal sedation. Lethal sedation does seem a poor choice.

Judge blocks federal executions; administration appealsA U.S. district judge on Monday ordered a new delay in federal executions, hours before the first lethal injection was scheduled to be carried out at a federal prison in Indiana. The administration immediately appealed to a higher court, asking that the executions move forward. The death penalty was formally abolished in Canada in 1976 and no one has been executed in Canada since 1962. So...which judge is not up to date on the law? Or is it CTV? Saving the lives of pedophiles is important to the left Just guillotine them. It ain't pretty but its more humane than arguing about what chemical does what and what happens when it doesn't.
