Tim Allen is back as Santa Claus in the new Disney+ series The Santa Clauses. - DisneyIt’s officially the holiday season, and with that, a myriad of new specials, reboots and cheesy romantic comedies about heiresses descending upon small towns to fall in love.

At least so far , The Santa Clauses is surprisingly dark and cynical for a series about Christmas and the ‘jolly old elf.’ It’s hard not to see this as a political missive about the ‘woke liberals’ diminishing traditional values, which gets in the way of what would be a perfectly saccharine, fun Christmas show.

What makes Spirited, now streaming on Apple TV+, unique, is the change in perspective. Focusing on the ghosts who are doing the haunting, rather than the ‘covetous old sinner’ getting their comeuppance. Octavia Spencer, who plays Briggs’ executive vice president, is underused but delivers a great performance as well.

In fact, had you not seen the Marvel branding in the intro, you might not even know this was part of the wider MCU and is just a neat, standalone sci-fi/action series.
