The show rests in the timeline between the prequel trilogy and the original films, as we see the Galactic Empire expanding its brutal influence over its citizens.Cassian, a lowly thief, lives on a backwater planet, taking odd jobs to get by. But gets himself in over his head when a robbery goes wrong and he gets the attention of Imperial bureaucrats, who don’t like anyone interfering in their grand schemes where the name of the game is total control.
Although Luna’s Cassian devours the screen every time he’s on it, Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma bring added depth to the drama. Indeed, the film serves mostly as a nostalgia trip, as memorable lines are rehashed or slightly tweaked to reflect the new century the witches find themselves in.
It’s perfectly fine family fun, albeit with some overacting and rough pacing in parts. The film also softens the Sanderson Sisters as villains, which is likely because all of these years later, many of us have come to enjoy these characters for their ridiculous, expressive lines.The sequel doesn’t have the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of its predecessor, but it was still entertaining to dip back in for a moment.Ana de Armas stars in Blonde as Norma Jean / Marilyn Monroe.
