After a bounceback season with the Blue Jays, Steven Matz has agreed to join the Cardinals on a four-year, $44-million deal.

The 2021 season saw Matz pitch more than 150 innings and throw more than 140 strikeouts for just the third time in his career, behind only his two best seasons in 2018 and '19. His 2020 campaign during the pandemic-shortened season was a disaster, however, where he ballooned his ERA to over nine and only pitched 30.2 innings in nine appearances, six of them starts.

The Cardinals, who made a surprise run to the post-season in 2021, are betting that Matz's 2021 performance is more in tune with his overall abilities than his 2020 dud. In St. Louis, Matz steps into a rotation that includes veteran Adam Wainwright, back for a 17th season, as well as Jack Flaherty, one of the most promising young starters in the National League who battled injuries for much of 2021.

The loss of Matz will now put further pressure on Blue Jays management to add starting pitching, but the market is continuing to shrink despite a looming work stoppage. The off-season so far has seen a number of talented starters, including Eduardo Rodriguez , Justin Verlander , Kendall Graveman and Anthony DeSclafani sign new contracts.

The remaining pool of free agent starters is headlined by Robbie Ray, who is coming off a Cy Young season with the Blue Jays and could be commanding more than the $131 million the Blue Jays just committed to Jose Berrios over a seven-year term. Two other notable starters on the free agent market still are future Hall of Famers Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer, both members of the Dodgers at season's end., and avoid posting profanity, personal attacks or harassment.

I guess he didn’t want a World Series ring because it’s gonna happen within the next 4 years

Pete Walker worked on him, that bounceback happens when you have a pitching coach that knows what he’a doing.Pete helped Ray have the best season he even got the Cy young,Ryu got some work done he improved Matz 2 they are all got better because of Pete’s hard work on them PERIOD!

The per year salary for Matz isn't bad. But I'm not sold on a 4 year commitment based on one year of being a slightly above average starting pitcher.

His choice. Too much term

Light em up

That is awesome for he and his family. I hope he has a great 4 years with the Cardinals and I thank him for his time here in Toronto.

No big deal. Next….

Good luck Cardinals. Said with a mouth full of sarcasm. P.S. this is the bird returned🖕🖕🖕🖕

The Jays couldn't match 11/season really. They couldn't have been too keen on keeping him

What is he gonna do without Pete Walker?

Bad choice by leaving the Toronto Blue Jays you're going to get your ass lit up in St Louis and I don't feel bad for you everybody watched St Louis this picture will be blown up and sent to the miners in the first two months

Good for him. Wonder what the Jays offered him? He may have to have Pete Walker on speed dial to achieve success.

This is a big loss, i had more hope of Matz staying than Ray even if Ray is more desireable to keep i didn't think we could resign him. I said it a couple weeks ago (critics didn't agree) the Jays will likely need to work trades to improve the rotation maybe not they will

soooo the blue jays wont have any pitching got it

Good for him
