How Peter Jackson eavesdropped on the Beatles in 1969

“He had hidden microphones everywhere, he was doing all sorts of sneaky things, and good on him,” says Jackson. “But if they wanted a private conversation, they’d wind up the amp really loud and John or George … would just start strumming their guitars idly, not playing anything, just strumming, really loud. So they’d be talking away and they’d be drowning out all the microphones.”

You can probably see where this is going. “This technology enabled us to strip out all this loud guitar stuff,” says Jackson. “We were able to reveal these private conversations that they were trying to cover up in 1969. It was a slightly naughty thing to do but … it was very much up to us to try to get them telling their own story through their original conversations on the day.

Let It Be was shot on 16 mm film that was then blown up to 35 mm for cinema projection. “And in 1970, even the 16 mm film stock were not that good,” says Jackson. “So you’ve now got a rather gloomy looking movie which people were projecting gloomy thoughts onto.
