ICYMI - Seberg biopic isn't the equal of star Kristen Stewart, says Chris Knight

There’s a certain symmetry in casting Kristen Stewart in the role of fellow movie star Jean Seberg. Yes, they have a passing facial resemblance, and a similar gamine physique. But the two Americans also found adoration abroad.

But the bulk of Stewart’s recognition comes from two films by Olivier Assayas that premiered in Cannes, where she is treated like royalty. Thankfully, this is where their lives diverge. As director Benedict Andrews’ new film shows, Seberg came to the notice of the FBI during the 1960s for her support of the civil rights movement. The agency made it a goal to discredit and intimidate her, a task it carried out with brutal efficiency; the harassment may have played a part in her eventual suicide.

Jack’s parallel, vaguely The Lives of Others storyline is a distraction the film scarcely needs. Stewart brings her serious, systematized style to the role of Seberg, and she’s great fun to watch; one star playing another. It takes control and self-awareness to pull off a performance like this – I’m reminded of Michelle Williams’ turn as Marilyn Monroe and, oddly, the bit in The Hunger Games where Katniss/Jennifer Lawrence has to act in a propaganda film. It’s a layer-cake performance.
