One star playing another makes for a layer-cake performance, but the script does her no favours

But the bulk of Stewart’s recognition comes from two films by Olivier Assayas (Personal Shopper and Clouds of Sils Maria) that premiered in Cannes, where she is treated like royalty. It’s difficult to take a biopic to task on matters of accuracy without also spoiling the plot, but suffice to say Seberg takes liberties. Most egregious, both historically and dramatically, is Jack O’Connell as FBI Agent Jack Solomon, who sympathizes with his quarry to the point where he tries to warn her about his own surveillance.

But the screenplay does her no favours. For one thing, it’s never quite clear whether Seberg is truly committed to the cause of Black rights, or whether she’s merely a pampered woman turned on by the trappings of the cause. Stewart is playing Seberg. Is Seberg merely playing a role herself? The movie isn’t saying.

Seberg opens Feb. 28 at the Carlton in Toronto; March 6 in Calgary; and March 27 in other cities including Ottawa.
