It is hard, a day after the Cherry Bomb, not to be somewhat wistful for the time when Don Cherry’s most controversial public utterances were about the importance of fighting in hockey.
Among the complaints is that Cherry’s freedom of speech has been violated, which I guess assumes it was his fundamental right to be paid handsomely to say whatever he wanted for five minutes every Saturday night, and that it was horribly unfair because Justin Trudeau wore blackface and he was re-elected. I’m not even sure what to do with that one.
He would find he doesn’t need to try so hard to win support. The other strain of the Cherry-was-right bombast is one that requires no justifying and agrees with him anyway. That is, some of his supporters are quite proudly saying, Don Cherry went on television and said immigrants who come here should be more like the rest of us, and there is nothing wrong with that.

He truly regrets if he hurt people but he chose his hill to die on. It’s a new world out there. He isn’t a politician, he’s a symbol of old Canada that ran into the new one. We need to all find common ground.

In a rapidly changing world where we are all trying to be better people, it’s possible to misspeak, and we should be allowed to correct ourselves without consequences. He spoke like many older frustrated Canadians who are struggling to be better people.
DC has always been one to shoot from the hip when talking rather then taking careful aim with his words He was given the opportunity to apologize and explain what he really meant but he refused and said he would let his words stand. NOW he's trying to backtrack on other media
He said that he mispoke. The pendulum has swung to far left. Its going to hit those left wingers directly in the ass on the way back.
Whatever: his remarks were insulting and inappropriate and his firing was the right thing. End of discussion.
Cherry's just a symptom. The only news here is how ineffectual the media articulates such divisions. Big city national media take partisan postures of cultural identity, impose phoney symbols of unity (WeTheNorth marketing) on a divided & skeptical public! Cue the Cherry bomb!🤔

In the end, Don Cherry isn't obliged to be right or wrong; he isn't obliged to share the views of 'theologians and thinkers;' isn't obliged to agree with anyone in or outside of Canada. Like everyone else in a democracy, he's entitled to his opinions and freedom to express them.
