After months of consultations and 16,000 responses to its national survey, the Health Standards Organization (HSO) released its second draft report on Tuesday.

Survey respondents said the following is needed:that residents’ rights are respected;that allowing for-profit care be reconsidered.

“Of the over 30,000 deaths to date since the pandemic began in Canada, 51 per cent, or about 16,000 deaths, have been in long-term care,” said Samir Sinha, chair of the HSO’s Long-Term Care Services Standard Technical Committee. In its 2020 fall economic statement, the federal government promised $1 billion for a Safe Long-Term Care Fund. In its budget in April, it announced an extra $3 billion for nursing homes to improve their standards.
