Provincewide strike sees two million Ont. schoolchildren out of class ONpoli

TORONTO -- For the first time in 24 years all four major teachers unions in Ontario are on strike the same day, shutting the province’s public education system and leaving more than two million school children out of class.

Lecce has repeatedly said the key sticking point in negotiations with high school teachers is compensation, with unions demanding a roughly two-per-cent wage increase and the government offering one per cent. Ontario teachers have been without a contract since Aug. 31, and talks with government stalled Dec.16.“What we hope to do is make this government finally listen, not just to the frontline educators, but also to the parents, who have told this government over and over again they don’t want bigger classroom sizes, they’re not interested in this mandatory e-learning,” he said.

Liz Stuart, president of the OECTA, said her union had some meaningful conversations with the government, but refused to elaborate.

And they wonder why they get no respect from parents or students in or out of class

These teachers are saying they are fighting cuts ~ stop trying to get a 2% raise and then the gov't would have more money for the schools and less going into teachers pockets!!! teachersstrike getbacktoclass yourhurtingkidstoo greedy osstf EFTO

Sneakily triangulating child care rebates and other files once covered by other Ministries is not an 'increase'. It's 3-card Monte at its worst. The new PC motto: 'We lie therefore we are'.

I find it strange that with all this strike business that the school year will end at the normal time? How many days are allotted for this kind of thing? Perhaps the school year should be extended for all the lost time? Certainly the teachers and the students can’t disagree?

Great quote line in this story: 'Deani Van Pelt, a senior fellow at Canadian research institution Cardus, highlighted that almost 1,400 independent schools in Ontario are open today.'

Fire every one of the teachers .they are over paid spoiled.

Ford has money for everything but workers providing services. Look at his paid 5 month vacation. Wineries, breweries and horse tracks.

They look like they are having a great time much more fun than a day in class!

Oh I see. Go on strike, put children’s education on the back burner, families scrambling to find childcare... but it’s somehow all “for the kids” StrikesHurtKids ChildrenFirst fedup

I don’t feel sorry for them at all! Maybe they should look at our neighbours and see what they make! And count there lucky stars! I have a lot of teachers in the family and none of them are picketing!

Honestly these people need to get with the times. Maybe we introduce re-training programs for teachers looking to start a new career?

YEAH.......BUT IT'S FOR THE KIDS !!

Do they have one of the best personal benefits and pension. They should be happy. What more can they ask for. Take a look at the other 3rd world countries and do a reality check.

fire every teacher and rehire anyone interested at a reduction American teachers will be flocking here

It's NOW time for back-to-work legislation. fordnation must impose a settlement contract that the taxpayers can live with.
