The provincial government has officially cancelled public exams for high school students for the 2022-2023 school year.

Public exams were first cancelled as the result of schools being closed during the first wave of COVID in 2020 and were cancelled over the next two years as well. Government says the decision is part of the Department of Education expanding its review of the K-12 system. They say that the public exam system, as it existed pre-COVID, “may no longer meet the educational needs of students.”

They say they are looking at creating an “innovative, up-to-date system of evaluating high school students.”

Many children are missing out on lessons in time management and study skills. Many parents try to guide them, but there is no penalty for late work and limited testing to assess what they learned. Last year my 16 year old didn’t get grades in math, just letters (G,A,M,E or S). 🤦‍♀️

This is where they're coming from.

Exams!!! We’re we going, we don’t need exams. Just my 2 cents

An interesting article from the department website!

Time for newfoundlanders to take a stand! They are targeting the kids! Wake up! Ffs

Teachers love the no accountability of their teaching capabilities! “ read chapter 12-14 I’ll be back in an hour!

This is what happens when you have the school board controlled by a government who is pushing an agenda and will change everything to implement it

Destroy the youth bankrupt the adults. Whats next? Euthanasia for the poor?

If the goal is mark inflation and 100% pass rates (no matter how much they actually know), then cancelling exams is a step in the right direction. One step closer to their goal of zero parent complaints. Well done NLESD!

JerryCranford I’m not reading them but I suspect there are quite a few comments here from people who know very little about the assessment and evaluation of students’ academic learning.

i didn’t have publics the year i graduated and i was so relieved. Schools should focus more on teaching study skills to prepare for post secondary (and even high school)

You get a participation ribbon, you get a ribbon, everyone gets a ribbon!

Ridiculous. They should keep the publics in place until they've actually created that 'innovative' change. It's useless not evaluating what the students know (or don't know) - way to set them up for unnecessary stress in coming years

So there is nothing in place to evaluate students progress in school? Why wasn't a replacement planned in its place over the past 2 years. With nothing to evaluate them.. how will their instructor next year assess aptitude level or what will post secondary institutions look at?

Just pass grade 7 to 12 , give them their Diplomas, God look at all teaches , we would have for everyone else 😂

Good. You can count on one hand the courses where you have to do that long, 3-4 hour exam. Nobody does that stuff anymore.

I see a new bunch of politicians in our future

Good! Those were dumb anyways

Just give them all a gold star and pass that way nobody gets left out and no one loses. There all equal and all winners.

LOL! These kids are gonna be fuk'd in University and fuk'd in life in general unfortunately.

No shock. Who needs high standards?

Rigour is in fairly steep decline. I hope we eventually find our legs again.

They don't want people to know how damaging lockdowns were.

Lol.

*sighs with relief*
