When Jeff Clements received the most recent property assessment for a piece of land he owns in the Mira area of Cape Breton, N.S., his reaction was that of sticker shock.

“A $100,000 jump within a span of a couple of months after we purchased the property, which is purely land,” says Clements.

"If you really want to start an industry in Cape Breton, you have to sit down and look at the next generation of people that will reside here,” he says. Council met Monday to discuss how to spend a $15-million grant from the province as part of equalization payments. Patrick deLamirande, a business professor at Cape Breton University, notes the assessment hike in CBRM – at about 6.3 per cent – isn't as big as some other municipalities. In Halifax, the rate went up between 10 to 20 per cent."We will have to re-evaluate the benefits of this system and what is the effect on people of this program and the evaluation," said deLamirande.

Condo owners in aging building face $14M in repairs. If they can't pay their part they risk losing their homes | CBC NewsAs much as $9 million of debt plus a rapidly deteriorating structure caught up to York Condominium Corporation No. 82, which runs the 321-unit building in Toronto's Jane and Finch neighbourhood. If it was me I would accept that I had lived there for years and purchase price and maintenance fees were just like rent. Not throw good money after bad. I would let mngmt sell my condo for the lien and walk away. Not ideal and have to find a new home but? This should be a reminder to people never to get into the condo trap. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Not doing repairs immediately is not an option. Every single person involved in this has potential for massive liability if anything happens to this building, regardless of fault.
