After an extended six-week hiatus, the curtain is about to rise on a new sitting. But with Omicron infections soaring across the country, it’s not clear how many MPs will return to the chamber in person — or what, if any, guidelines they’re getting from their respective caucus leadership., MPs can participate remotely in all Commons proceedings, including voting via the secure mobile app developed by House administration during an earlier wave of the pandemic.
So, with social-distancing rules renewed across the country, will a critical mass of MPs choose to stay virtual, at least for the first weeks of the new sitting? Meanwhile, NDP sources say “two or three MPs” will be in the House for debates, and up to five during question period, all of them sufficiently spread out.
At least one Green MP is also planning to take his actual seat, according to party spokesperson Debra Eindinguer.
