Police departments across the U.S. face a dilemma as they review the behaviour of dozens of officers who were in Washington the day of the Capitol riot. Experts agree that officers who were involved in the melee should be fired and charged for their role.

Trump supporters stand on top of a police vehicle, Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at the Capitol in Washington. As Congress prepares to affirm President-elect Joe Biden's victory, thousands of people have gathered to show their support for President Donald Trump and his claims of election fraud. For two Virginia police officers who posed for a photo during the deadly U.S. Capitol insurrection, the reckoning has been swift and public: They were identified, charged with crimes and arrested.

An Associated Press survey of law enforcement agencies nationwide found that at least 31 officers in 12 states are being scrutinized by their supervisors for their behaviour in the District of Columbia or face criminal charges for participating in the riot. Officials are looking into whether the officers violated any laws or policies or participated in the violence while in Washington.

But Ayesha Bell Hardaway, a professor at Case Western Reserve University law school, said an officer's presence at the rally creates a credibility issue as law enforcement agencies work to repair community trust, especially after last summer's protests against police brutality sparked by the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

"We stand with and add our support to those who have denounced the violence and illegal activity that took place that day," said Police Chief Ken Criner, Capt. Mark Lovern and Town Manager James Ervin. "Our town and our police department absolutely does not condone illegal or unethical behaviour by anyone, including our officers and staff."

Officers' First Amendment rights "don't extend to expressing words that may be violent or maybe express some prejudice," Wexler said, "because that's going to reflect on what they do when they're working, when they're testifying in court."

Fire them, their unions don’t need to defend that crap

Anyone has a right to support Donald trump as long as they didn’t break any laws. Wow CTV

Insurrection?

What percentage of tweets are american related for CTV ?

Firing is the only discipline.

Those officers would represent what is wrong with the police force. If they believed the false BS enough to jump on a plane, fly to the Capitol, and protest that tells you their level of naivety and delusion. If they breached the building then it’s a criminal matter.

Stop calling it a riot. This is a riot ⬇️

No dilemma, conduct unbecoming an officer of the law. Fired!

all who participated need to transition to a new occupation, not fit to serve the public.

FN well better!! Let’s see Is joining an Insurrection against the government illegal?!!! WTF is wrong with America? Traitors serving in Police Forces...the Military...even in intelligence!! Ridiculous!

Has anything been done about the officers who opened the gate and literally invited them in? On video!

Guys — whose job it is to know the law, broke the law and their colleagues are weighing if they should enforce the law. There is no rule of law in the USA.

If they broke the law they should be punished.

'hmmmm, should we punish the insurrectist? Nah, they're one of us.' (An approximate transcript of every single police self-investigation)
