SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 31, 2023 | SaltWireCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man caught trying to climb through a window he broke at Government House while highly intoxicated has been sentenced to jail time.

Donald Neil MacAusland, 59, appeared in provincial court in Charlottetown on Oct. 27 for sentencing before retired provincial court judge John Douglas, who has returned recently in a part-time capacity. MacAusland was initially charged with break and enter but instead agreed to plead guilty to mischief for breaking the window at Government House. MacAusland was also sentenced for a later offence of using counterfeit money as if it were genuine.

After the facts were read in court, MacAusland's lawyer said his client wasn't able to give details to police that night about what happened due to his high level of intoxication. Then, on Aug. 5, 2022, MacAusland was at the Needs convenience store in Charlottetown across from the Community Outreach Centre on Euston Street. He then bought a bag of chips and chocolate candy using a fake Canadian $50 bill, said Crown attorney John Diamond at sentencing.

MacAusland was allowed to serve the jail sentence intermittently because he has a job working on a farm. Terrence McEachern is a justice reporter with SaltWire in Prince Edward Island. He can be reached by email at
