“If there’s one tenet that defines democracy different than any other system, it’s called majority government,” David Crombie — former Tiny Perfect Mayor of Toronto, former federal conservative MP cabinet minister, perpetual symbol of reasonable political consensus — said.” “The idea that you can get rid of it and say ‘trust me’ is bizarre.”
I mean, there’s Alberta’s Danielle Smith, who in her first days as premier is boldly modelling what constitutional expert“the most unconstitutional bill in Canada’s modern history.” Macfarlane says the so-called Alberta “sovereignty act” is “a full-frontal assault on not only the very idea of federalism and the constitutional division of powers but also on responsible government and representative democracy.
Though he backed off his most recent attempt to do so, he has also been conducting a shock-and-awe campaign of legislation overturning various elements of Ontario municipal democracy while giving away lucrative development opportunities to various corporate interests. If Quebec’s government led the way in showing how to disregard democratic norms, its people seem to be leading the way in public acceptance of that trend. Anfound a “significant minority” of Canadians “showing enthusiasm” for authoritarianism — specifically, those agreeing they want or at least are open to “a strong leader who does not bother with Parliament or elections.” That anti-democratic sentiment was strongest in Quebec, where 43 per cent of people don’t oppose such an strongman system .
thekeenanwire There is nothing majority about trudeau's wimsical dictatorship style. Protest in China is ok, but not in Canada.
thekeenanwire “Quebec have been wearing their minority-bashing authoritarian tendencies proudly, invoking the notwithstanding clause” Did the elected government of Quebec not have a majority in the provincial legislature?
Funny how Edward completely ignores the MINORITY Liberal federal government acting like they were given a majority. I guess that’s what the Liberals have bought with their media money….”journalists” like Edward Keenan
Surprise?!?! Another conservative politician showing disregard for democracy No more Mr nice guy. . . (never was ...)
Love this. For some reason, the MSM was quite satisfied with Mayor Photo-op. Not a single expose of the background and connections of this guy. Now, we've got Super Mayor, and - finally - some sounds of discontent.
I think it says you get the government you (don't) vote for. Can we now please all show up at Queen's Park together and tell fordnation to undo all his antidemocratic actions - including the reduction of TO city council?
Toronto is the 4th largest city in North America. It’s where I was born & raised, it’s where I got inspired to follow a creative lifestyle, In a city this big if one viable candidate could not be found to compete against John Tory, the city has changed, and not for the better.
As opposed to our minority rule Federal government? And Provincial government? Is there any government in Canada that actually has a majority (other than Alberta and Saskatchewan of course)?
5 Star Mayor🤦♀️
I can't believe that JOHN TORY DID THIS THE LAST NICE GUY IS GONE NOW WERE STUCK WITH Liars 🤡
