We should debate the best COVID treatments. But let’s eschew revisionist history

has compiled 2,399 papers on 590 treatments administered to 437,936 patients with COVID-19. Treatment modalities have not been neglected during the pandemic.

In fact, the first widely used and effective treatment was dexamethasone, a 60-year-old steroid drug still valued for its anti-inflammatory properties. Among the recommended drugs in current Canadian use, most are repurposed. This includes rheumatoid arthritis drugs , hepatitis C treatment , a blood thinner , an asthma treatment , and yes, the psychiatric drug on which the essay focused . Many more repurposed drugs have been studied worldwide but are widely viewed as unproven or ineffective.

Despite enrolments in the tens of thousands, early vaccine trials lacked statistical power to look at severe outcomes of infection such as hospitalization or death. As Dr. Doidge acknowledges, the decision to focus instead on protection from symptomatic infection was a strategic choice to accelerate trial completion during a rapidly escalating crisis.

Instead, the essay emphasizes the reduced effectiveness of vaccines at preventing symptomatic disease caused by Omicron, and also obfuscates the big difference in denominators when highlighting similar ICU occupancy among those with and without vaccination.

'I feel forgotten': Patients in Ontario wait for surgeries postponed due to COVID-19 | CBC NewsThe backlog of health-care services has grown 'quite substantially' during the pandemic, but backlogs and wait-lists have been an issue for decades, says one Toronto doctor. I think it’s time to rethink/redesign our health care model. We need to include more privatization. Obviously the universal system isn’t cutting it. We can do better and we need to do better. Not against universal health care but our current model is not working Decades of defunding at both federal and provincial levels left healthcare poor even before the pandemic. Tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires that is so cool 😒 It’s so easy to claim that the woes felt across the country are not due to insane bureaucratic meddling and ineptitude but are actually because of the pandemic. There are many examples of third world countries with a better Covid response than Canada.
