Opinion: The fact that we’re not having a more serious national conversation about the casual use of the clause to undermine fundamental rights in this country is just bonkers, writes supriyadwivedi

My first ever op-ed was published in the Montreal Gazette on March 3, 2011. Directly above my piece in the print edition of the paper was a column from Don Macpherson, a venerated, long-time Gazette columnist, entitled “Quebec toying with rights for short-term political gain.

There are multiple objectionable parts to the bill, and there are several aspects that are blatantly unconstitutional. Arguably, one of the most egregious elements is contained in provisions that relate to strengthening the powers of investigation and inspection of the province’s language police, known officially as the

Whatever one’s opinions about anglophones or allophones in Quebec not being francophone or Québécois enough, surely all reasonable people should be able to agree on the patently absurd notion of allowing such a high degree of unconstitutional intrusion from the state.

supriyadwivedi WOW! Says the person who supports vaccine mandates including Del Duca’s plan for mandatory shots. WTF , out of touch much?!

acoyne supriyadwivedi Oh COVID-19 ,your so yesterday.

supriyadwivedi Trudeau Jr is like his Dad. He has one set of rules and principles for Quebec, another set of rules and principles for the nation, and only his rules for his justice minister to follow. TrudeauDictatorshipMustGo

acoyne supriyadwivedi What kind of conversation would you like? It's impossible to remove the clause from the Constitution and its entire reason for existing *is* to undermine fundamental rights in this country. Not a secret. If anything the other provinces have been too timid with its use.

supriyadwivedi Just kick this joke of province out of Canada already. They are like a tumor that sucks up resources and contributes nothing.

acoyne supriyadwivedi Nobody cares what Quebec does and most people would be happy to see it separate from the rest of us. Most Canadians would be okay to be rid of them. There should be a referendum-it would be a wake up notice.

supriyadwivedi I am sure that Supriya knows that the province of QC has been using the clause in this manner since the day after it was made into law....right Supriya?

supriyadwivedi I think you are right.

acoyne supriyadwivedi And, don’t look to JustinTrudeau to lift a finger to defend or improve the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Trudeau has never done a thing to defend, advance, or legislate a right unless forced to by a court.

acoyne supriyadwivedi Wouldn’t want to jeopardize liberal seats in Quebec

supriyadwivedi I have voted for PMJT every time p. But I will blame JustinTrudeau & liberal_party for this. 💯 He seems to protect his hometown at all costs. Fear of what? Quebec is wrong on every level with language & divisive bigoted misogynistic laws. Ridiculous.

supriyadwivedi

supriyadwivedi Just read that in the globe by Andrew coyne! Why isn’t it front and centre

supriyadwivedi Quebec doesn't exist to me, so I don't care what they do. If you're an Anglo and were dumb enough to stick around after 1976 you get what you get. Gen Wolfe should have sent all the French packing as our country would have been much better for it.

supriyadwivedi Do you have any clue about the circumstances how that Charter was written and signed in 1982? Do you think Quebec gives a &$! about it? I feel zero shame we're using that clause that allowed the ROC to sign the charter. And unlike the USA, the constitution is not even secular.

supriyadwivedi The Charter was well-intentioned, and entirely nullified by the notwithstanding clause. It only took a while for politicians to understand that there were no restraints on their use of it.

supriyadwivedi Top running political leaders will always be cowards when it comes to Quebec. It is up to the voters to force the issue. Force Quebec to decide between being a proper member of the greatest country in the world, or leave into oblivion.
