I’m not a Catholic and I don’t know much about popes, but I know enough to suspect that were he alive today, Pope John Paul II probably wouldn’t be thrilled about what’s going on in Willowdale.
Tyndale Green, the development project by Markee Developments, a company launched by former Toronto chief city planner Jennifer Keesmaat, calls for 14 residential and mixed-use buildings on the 22.75-hectare site; buildings that would accommodate roughly 1,500 rental homes. Fast forward a couple of decades and the Motherhouse is exactly where it was the day the pope arrived. It will remain there. Nobody, not Markee, not the university that still uses the building, is going to tear it down.
I’ve heard a lot of wacky NIMBY justifications for opposing housing in my time but “a saint stayed here” is a new one. It’s also, arguably, not very Christ-like. “However,” their statement reads, “the Sisters support the concept of affordable housing and have put this belief into action by establishing Fontbonne Place, operated through Fontbonne Ministries.”
After more than a year of community consultations the future of Tyndale Green is up in the air. Or more accurately, it is sitting at the Ontario Land Tribunal. Markee recently appealed to the tribunal when, from its view, it became clear consultations at the municipal level had reached a standstill. If all goes well, shovels could be in the ground on the project at the end of next year.
