The Liberal government tabled legislation on Monday to broaden Canada’s laws restricting “medical assistance in dying” because a Quebec judge ruled last September that “assisted dying” should be available to those who are not dying, but may have many years to live.
Parliament had good reason to include the “reasonably foreseeable natural death” restriction, and the previous Liberal government itself championed its passage. So it is striking that the government did not defend Parliament’s law by appealing the Quebec judge’s ruling. Instead, this Liberal government jumped at the opportunity to change the law to reflect that ruling.
As the Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes, human beings, simply because they are human, possess a basic dignity which is the “foundation of justice and peace in the world” and the basis of human rights. Paramount among these is the right to life. Every human being deserves equal protection by the law regardless of their health, abilities, or feelings of self-worth.
The title alone makes me angry.. religious nonsense trying to block rights and freedoms!

We all face death so it is never about dying - it is about when. Everyone should have the right to pick that time and everyone else should just bug out - it is nothing to do with them. There is nothing more personal than your life. Roll on a broader regulation for MAID!

I agree with the Quebec judge it needs to be expanded. Until we treat people with disabilities better why make them suffer? Opioids cut back, ODSP you can’t afford the care you need, services are almost non existent. ALS, Parkinson’s etc. I would to write a counter to this.

Opinion: it’s not your business how people chose to live their last days in Canada. You can choose to live through suffering. I may choose something different when the time comes. This cannot be compared to pre-World War II euthanasia, which was about eugenics and racial purity.

Providing palliative care and suicide prevention are not mutually exclusive to providing medical assistance in dying. The fundamental concept is personal choice.

I think the foundation for human rights should include the right to autonomy and self determination. I am genetically predisposed to an illness, I will plan for MAID. I am proud to live in a country that allows for my basic human dignity to be realized and cherished.

I think it is people's right to die for particularly those suffering from serious mental illnesses.. I have never experienced depression.. but many live everyday of their lives depressed and medicine has failed to help

Why is it that those who want to control the actions of OTHERS employ such inflammatory phrases?
Section 7 of the Charter guarantees us “life, liberty and security of person”. If it is the place of the state to guarantee us life, surely the state can grant us the autonomy and liberty to choose our death.
To me the “if we open the definition of who’s allowed assisted suicide, we will be killing teens and children” sounds a lot like “if we open the definition of marriage to include gays, people will marry animals”. This is untrue and unhelpful.
