Chuck Strahl: Scheer has a big job ahead of him. The caucus and party members need him to show that he has learned from the past campaign

Way back when , the leader of Canada’s Official Opposition was a fellow named Jean Chrétien. A lot of people thought Chrétien should step down as leader, and the sooner the better. Worse yet, it wasn’t the other parties who said it, it was a widespread belief amongst the Liberals themselves. A couple dozen of his own MPs actually signed an open letter saying he had to go immediately, or all was lost.

The situation isn’t entirely analogous to today’s Conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, since we’ve just finished an election, not about to embark on one. But as former prime minister Stephen Harper has advised, it would good for Conservative members and MPs to keep calm and not light their hair on fire. Notwithstanding the efforts of a few journalists, diehard armchair quarterbacks and a wannabe or two to pour on the kerosene, I believe most members are doing just that.

So Scheer did his job, and with the sole exception of Max Bernier , he kept everyone together and focused on their work. Arguably he did it better than Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had MP defections, firings and departures throughout his term. Scheer has a big job ahead of him in the next few months. The caucus and party members will expect and need him to show that he has learned from the past campaign, that he will make the changes necessary to move from opposition to government. It means looking at everything from personnel, internal processes and communication to branding, policy renovation and a candid evaluation of his own performance.

Perhaps, but if you can’t readily defeat the 2019 Trudeau campaign....

Stay for disaster of Canada and wait to win can be uncontrol anarchy. Canada can not survive as unity because some of Canadians know that have only one life that want to spend worthy( dignity)No every one believe in réincarnation. Slave(without property, future) not has dignity.

It isn’t conservatives who are creating the chaos.

No, get rid of him now.

Agreed! Everyone is quick to judge but they weren’t in the hot seat were they?

Are you kidding me the Conservatives have strayed so far right they stand alone. American style campaigns reminiscent of Trump, made up lies and fake news!! Now Separation. Not all westerners voted Conservative and the ones that did may have got more than they bargained for.

Noooooooooooooo!

ShiteGrampSays Let him be passionate, loud, animated, proud, concerned for the country, leave the competition in the dust, inspire Canadians ..be the strong impatient leader. Then we'll see.

No.

It's mostly the press and McKay A leadership review will take place, but no lynching

Yes time to pack his bags.

If Andrew Scheer is as bad as MSM portrays wouldnt it serve their purpose to ignore him and let him implode? This constant agitation must mean they are afraid of him winning?

The majority of the voting public voted conservative yet a socialist is still in charge. Why should I be calm.

Agree with the premise.... give PMJT more rope and he will surely hang himself. Clearly next time we need to focus 100% on the big cities of Ontario and Quebec where they are stubborn and just don't get the reality of how things are and are the only strong bastions of Liberalism

No. I'm a Conservative, 22. and I've never seen Scheer as a leader since he won the leadership race. I just don't feel a connection with him . Lacks emotion behind what he says.

Canadians don't like Scheer he lacks character and charisma. Trudeau is not perfect but he is comfortable with public unlike Scheer. Scheer is so unpopular he is just as bad as Doug Ford.

Out of time. Please step down and allow a fiscally conservative, morally responsible person to take your place

😂😂😂😂

Very condescending..... No comment on the disappearance of the guy who won the election though.

All real Canadians are going to vote for The Wexit Party so it doesn’t matter who leads the Conservatives anymore

He’s a religious nut in a society that is increasingly agnostic...

acoyne Give him time for what!? He's had plenty of time and he flubbed it. Out he goes; we need serious substantial sound leadership with practical ides. Not the petty myopic infantile personal attacks that we've seen from him.

acoyne Give it time, Andy will turn from a bullfrog into a handsome prince. 🙄🙄

Not so much. This was his election to win and the Conservatives blew it with his leadership. He'll still be a devout Catholic and that clip indicating his personal beliefs about gay marriage will still exist in four years. There's no moving forward from this point.

acoyne Why? He is a bigot, a liar, a science denier and utterly lacks any leadership qualities.

To pack

He had 2 years.

Yes!! Leave dimples alone! Hes great for the liberals!

And don’t forget the media is going to be just as biased with the next conservative leader as they have been with the last couple. CBSNews CTVNews gl

We already were, it’s the pundits on MSM who were hanging him

Scheer failed to connect with voters in Ontario and Montreal. This is a problem we can't ignore. It's not personal. It's business. It will be no different a second time around. We need new leadership. Someone who is able to demonstrate anger with the liberal government.

Yes BUT he said he was ready to be PM only a few weeks ago! Check out his resume & then say seriously/honestly ask if time is the answer TIME INDEED!

Kick the bum to the curb

RachieBabe079 Nothing wrong with Scheer. When your political opponents are pushing a fire Scheer narrative, you know who they are afraid of. Now is not the time to circle the wagons and shoot inwards. CPC_HQ made gains, now to make the changes to get it over the top.

KarlBelanger Is that an implied Liberal endorsement?

Once again National Post is tone deaf. Canadians do not trust Andrew Scheer or the Conservative Party of Canada.

The Conservatives lost the election specifically because of Scheer. The campaign they ran was ridiculous, it was proven, by longtime conservatives that expressed concern over his leadership abilities and the lack of information provided on their platform. Listen to your voters.

maybe split the party back into the PC and the Reform parties?

To wipe his ass? Nah. We're taking the reigns

To do what exactly?

It was a layup and he missed. Max would have dunked on the socialists.

Much saner than ridiculous 'advice' given by MSM types who hate conservative voters, especially those in West. There is no rush. Let the Libs show their hand. Let minority froth with its attacks, debt demands, climate change hysteria, and offer constructive solutions. Think!

Wrong.
