Among his many achievements, Lincoln Alexander was our first Black member of Parliament. He will be most remembered for his genuine love for Canadians. A tribute to Alexander on his 100th birthday. Opinion

Today, Canadians are remembering the Honourable Lincoln Alexander and celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth.

It was not long ago that the world erupted in righteous indignation over the killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others. We continue to rise up in protest against the brutal murders of innocent people in Canada and other parts of the world. When we named our law school after Lincoln Alexander, we received hundreds of congratulatory messages, letters and tweets from those who admired him. The majority did not focus on his list of professional triumphs, but rather on how he touched their lives, even if only for a brief moment.

Today, as the founding dean of Canada’s newest law school, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Ryerson University, I work with exceptional faculty and staff who are building a rigorous academic program that harnesses technology, promotes innovation and shapes lawyers equipped to expand the reach of justice.

Canada chooses oil companies over Indigenous peoplesMake no mistake, our governments are choosing oil companies over Indigenous peoples—and that’s not a promising path to reconciliation. No surprise. Canadian govts consistently choose oil companies over all Canadians generally. That's why they say one thing and do another. Canada doesn’t determine the price of oil. If we suggest to ourselves that reconciliation is impossible, that belief will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. By openning our mind to the possibility that with forgiveness, learning, growth from the betrayal we may bring about a more fulfilling relationship than we envision
