TORONTO -- An Ontario woman’s petition has garnered over ten thousand signatures within three days of it being launched. Petitioner Ritu Sihota is hoping that her fight to bring her family members back to Canada from India will find strength in numbers.
“It’s been very hard,” says Sihota in an interview on CTV News Channel. “I’ve been emailing MPs and MPPs, and anyone I can get a hold of. I just was getting the same answers over and over again.”Canadian repatriation flights have been retrieving stranded travellers from destinations around the world. Chartered flights have brought travellers from Peru, Morocco, Honduras, Spain, Ecuador, El salvador and Guatemala over the past week.
Sihota thinks more still needs to be done for citizens in India. With thousands of signatures on her petition, she is hoping to “get the attention of our elected MP’s, and get them to take some action and put some pressure on Ottawa to get our loved ones home.”
So all of Canada should be at risk because her family ignored the return deadline and are now selfishly asking how many people to interact with them to return home. They aren’t flying with wings, they need an airport and plane and all the people involved to get them here!
The response should depend on whether they were visiting or living in India.

As much as I sympathize and would love to see them come home, with 15,000 people there, it would take 29 flights using the world's largest plane the A380 which typically seats 525. In addition to all the flights to other countries that maybe have 2000 people.

If someone got stranded because their flight was cancelled while on vacation, sure bring them home. If someone suddenly decides they would rather be in Canada during this time, don't ask taxpayers to cover that.

They asked all travellers to return home. We can’t risk bringing anyone in right now... We have a considerable population aged over 60, and our health care resources are also limited. We can’t compromise the public health and safety for someone who disregards the warnings.
I also know a lot of folks who went to India, including my dad. they all got the message, changed or got new flights and came back last week. We changed my dads flight, then Air India cancelled and grounded his flight. Booked air China and he was back in Canada 24 hrs later.
Why is that our problem? If they travelled there, then it’s there problem.

For several weeks, countries all over the world have been shutting borders, it was just a matter of time before India did as well. There’s no excuse other than they chose to stay. Of a petition was started to not go and retrieve them, there’d be well over 10000 signatures.

Sad situation, however, if they left in Feb or March, they knew the consequences. This should not be on taxpayers when people are being selfish and will potentially harm Canadians and our healthcare system and front line workers when they get back home. Stay safe where you are.

Everyone must stay where they are currently! Travelling is one of the dangerous thing right now and safety of the person should of utmost priority. Rest assured and hope, the person would be safe in India.

I’ve read the comments on the petition site and can’t believe the people asking for help did not try to get out weeks ago. They waited until Modi shutdown the country. Given India’s lack of testing and the number of people not practising social distancing testing needs to happen
