Doug Ford to announce gradual lifting of public-health restrictions as health minister sees ‘glimmers of hope’ in Ontario’s fight against Omicron

Ontario Premier Doug Ford will on Thursday announce a gradual lifting of public-health restrictions that were implemented earlier this month to blunt a powerful wave of COVID-19 in the province driven by the more contagious Omicron variant.

On Wednesday, Health Minister Christine Elliott said Ontario was seeing “glimmers of hope” in its fight against the Omicron variant, while Mr. Ford has said this week that he was expecting to make a “positive” announcement soon. “But our goal has always been to ensure capacity is there to provide care for those who need it. Given current trends, we are increasingly confident in our ability to do so.”

Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, said the rate of hospital admissions and cases in the intensive-are unit are increasing at a slower pace. The average length of stay in hospital for COVID-19 patients is now five days with the Omicron variant, compared with nine days with Delta, he said. The government announced on Jan. 3 that restaurants were ordered closed for indoor dining.

Matt Anderson, the CEO of Ontario Health, which manages the province’s health system, noted that at the peak of the third wave there were nearly 900 COVID-19 patients in ICUs.

Without enough tests how are we supposed to know where we’re at?

He saved Emma TorontoStar & other Torontonians during the snowstorm. Wait until he announces the free barbecue just before the election. How can u not vote for a man who provides free hamburgers & sausages? Quid pro quo, eh? Is our Premier just another theJagmeetSingh of NDP?

Why? These restrictions aren't that severe, and the longer we keep indoor gatherings shut down the better. Provide assistance for the businesses affected, create a system to aid ppl to change the structure of their businesses, and go as long as possible.

What about the LTC residents still imprisoned in their rooms Do something for them PLEASE!!

This will be reversed Jan 28.

didn't learn anything I see

Time to let the vaxx passports go. You tried blaming the unvaxxed. The vaxxed 'reaped the rewards' as Fauci said and look what happened. Time to wake up when you lessen the restrictions. The vaccine mandates failed... just say it. The people will respect honesty. Make it right!

Phases, grades, steps, regions, levels, colour-coding....the thesaurus will not save us from Ford's incompetence.

So why Jan. 31?

So Canada-USA will be at 50% capacity?

Thank you master

High time my boy needs to losen his belt. Gettin all fat up in eeeeeeere

Hospitalizations and deaths at all time pandemic highs. Hospitals collapsing under the pressure What could go wrong.....

No reason to close them in the first place! I don't understand why he closed off everything instead of saying proof of vaccine passport and you can enter. Time to go full UK and live with covid. There is no exit plan on Canada! 🇨🇦 Invest in healthcare and fix the mess. It is time for the Feds and Provinces to sort this out. Pathetic!

How do they believe they will get around client attorney privilege?! And I used to admire Giuliani. But, tainted by the corrupt trump, Giuliani has become a historic and historical disappointment.
